  Mesa Loop Hike – 8:30am.   We walk a short way on Meigs Rd to Dolores Drive and then on to La Coronilla Drive where we will enter Honda Valley Park.   We will traverse the park and then head up the hill to Miramonte Dr to enjoy the panorama. We will wend our way down the hill to Shoreline Park and return to our starting point.
  

  The hike is about 5.5 miles and goes up and down throughout the Mesa Alta with magnificent views of homes, islands, ocean, and mountains.  The hike should take approximately 2 hours.  The elevation change is ~ 400 feet. Note that there are several busy street crossings as well as roads without sidewalks so caution is needed while walking.

  DIRECTIONS.  Park in the Lazy Acres Lot at 320 Meigs Dr., Santa Barbara.

  Dining In! is a fun and welcoming way for newcomers to Santa Barbara to connect and build friendships.

  Here's how it works:

  • ​Potlucks: We organize 3-6 dinner parties per month, with varying levels of formality from casual appetizers to full dinners. Parties range from 6-14 guests.
  • ​Hosts: Offer their home and tableware, sometimes a dish too. They coordinate with guests about the theme and food e.g. Mediterranean, Barbeque, Mexican….
  • ​Guests: Bring a beverage and a dish to share (appetizer, entree, side, dessert) as agreed with the host.
  • ​Everyone: Helps make the event fun and memorable!

  ARROYO BURRO/DOUGLAS PRESERVE

  Where: Start at Arroyo Burro parking lot, 2981 Cliff Dr., Santa Barbara

  Directions: We will meet at the parking area at Hendry's Beach (also known as Arroyo Burro County Park). You can find us at the far end of the auxiliary parking area (the parking spots furthest from the beach). Look for the NEWCOMERS Sign.

  We meet up and set out on the sidewalk eastbound.

  Cross the bridge that leads up and through the windswept woods of Douglas Preserve as we make our way to the bluffs above Arroyo Burro Beach. From the far point, we can follow along the bluff and, if we're lucky, see a hang-glider leap from the cliff into the breeze that rises from below. As we leave the Preserve, we take a short walk down a residential street (past the Beach Boys' former compound and recording studio) over to the Mesa Lane steps. The loop is 2 miles plus a little. The 200-foot rise at the beginning of the walk is a wide path that traverses an incline, fun to do at a relaxed pace. Dogs are welcome. Bring your dog to this!

  No need to register. Just show up. After the walk, you can join us for coffee, tea, and treats at Lighthouse Coffee, 1819 Cliff Drive.

  Like all Weekend Amblers events, this amble is open to Newcomers, prospective Newcomers, and friends that you bring.

  Join the delightful Shanan Harrell*, our Sound Bath performer, as she returns to Newcomers for another beautiful outdoor experience by the ocean. Enjoy a Sound Bath as she brings this expertise to us.

  Her intention for the time together: first, we will get comfortable and quiet ourselves with a brief meditation, then with the first ring of the chimes, strike of the bowl, and peal of the gong, ancient instruments will serve as a vibratory portal to a sense of peace and ease, directing your consciousness to that sweet spot of silent stillness. Yes please!

  The session will last 45 minutes, or less, followed by a quiet gathering. Wear comfortable clothes and please bring a mat or blanket for the ground (and pillows to make yourself comfy). We will also have chairs for those who prefer to sit.

  Coffee, tea & pastries afterwards!

  *SHANAN HARRELL is a decades-long student and teacher of yoga and meditation. She is the founder of the Tehachapi Yoga Tribe and author of Stumbling Towards Enlightenment: A Yoga 101 Collection. In the past decade she has added sacred sound instruments to her practice and performs for classes, workshops and retreats around California. She feels that being a "Sacred Gongster" is her dharma and looks forward to sharing the magic of Sound with you.

  Looking to volunteer? Team up with Newcomers as well as some seasoned local volunteers and SB Foodbank staff to distribute food via the Healthy School Pantry Program at Franklin Elementary School.

  Each month, the Healthy School Pantry Program brings nutritious food, food demonstrations, food stamp outreach, health screenings, nutrition and physical education, and gardening instruction to the children and families at Franklin Elementary School. Participating children and their families leave with a bag of fresh produce and food staples, a recipe for the food received and other resources and tools to help their family make nutritious choices and manage financial situations. No previous experience is needed, just bring your team spirit! Some lifting of canned goods and produce boxes may be required. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing that may get a little dirty or wet. Gloves will be provided for handling food items. This distribution is usually set up in the school gym, but be prepared for an outdoors setting. If you have any Spanish language ability, you might have a chance to use it! Come lend a hand!

  Please join us for a Springtime coastal ride on Saturday, March 22. Approx. 25 miles.

  We'll meet at Rincon Point Beach Parking Lot and roll out at 9am.  We'll head south on the Rincon Multi-Use Trail to Ventura and back. This route is almost entirely flat with several miles on a dedicated bike path. The HWY 1 portion of the route has almost no traffic as most vehicles are on HWY 101. eBikes Welcome! Don't forget your helmet.

  Please join the Weekend Amblers as we explore the North Campus Open Space in Goleta. This flat amble will be around three miles in length. We’ll travel through and around recently restored wetlands around Devereux Creek. This estuary supports a diversity of plants, birds, fish, and wildlife.

  There’s no need to register; just show up. Dogs are allowed on a leash, though some amblers might choose a brief, optional side-trip along a nature trail where no dogs are allowed. Bring water and sunblock. You may also want to bring binoculars to see the birds.

  Afterwards we plan to enjoy coffee and treats at a coffee shop in Goleta.

  In the very unlikely event that a downpour is expected, we'll send an email to the people on this mailing list the night prior.

  Directions: We will meet at the Carlton-Duncan Visitor Plaza, 6969 Whittier Drive, in Goleta. The parking lot is a half block west of Storke Road. Look for the Newcomers sign.

  This event is crafted for members in their 20s, 30s, and 40s but all are welcome.

  Contingencies:

  This event is canceled if it is raining. Parking is limited at the Snyder Trailhead so leave early and be prepared to find gravel parking on Paradise Road. Please bring water and dress in layers.

  Important:

  The Snyder Trailhead is located directly on Paradise Road but has limited parking. Street parking is permitted on gravel areas of Paradise Road.

  Directions From Downtown Santa Barbara:

  Head northwest on US-101 North: Depart downtown Santa Barbara by merging onto US-101 North.

  Take exit 146A for CA-154/Cachuma Lake: After approximately 8 miles, take exit 146A to merge onto CA-154 North toward Cachuma Lake. Continue on CA-154 North: Drive for about 9 miles on CA-154 North.

  Turn right onto Paradise Road: Look for the sign for Paradise Road and turn right and proceed eastward for approximately 4 miles. The Snyder Trailhead is located on the south side of Paradise Road, situated between Los Prietos Campground and the Santa Barbara Ranger Station.

  Santa Barbara Newcomers Club is the largest social club in all of Santa Barbara! We have over 650 members and typically have over 80 events each month. Please join us for one of our monthly Orientation Meetings designed for all those new to Newcomers. This meeting is hosted by the VP's of Membership and is designed to orient you to the SB Newcomers Club, make sure you know how to use the various tools to register for events, connect with other members, and give you tips on how to make the most of your membership.   Chakras, which means “wheel” or “disk” in Sanskrit, are considered portals through which the main energetic channels of the body flow. While there are over 100 chakras throughout the body, we will focus on the seven main chakras.

  These seven chakras are aligned along an axis from the base of the spine to the crown of the head, encompassing both the front and back of the body. The chakra system is a complex energy network that communicates with our entire being and directly influences our emotional and physical health.

  When our chakra system is aligned, clear, and balanced, it can bring greater peace and harmony to our body, mind, spirit, and overall life. We will conclude our time together with a chakra meditation designed to open and balance these seven main chakras.

  Newcomers have a one time opportunity to see three different cutting-edge dance videos (aka "screendance"), choreographed and curated by Newcomer Sarah Holmes, faculty with the UCSB Department of Theater and Dance. Participants will explore how choreography, film (on three screens) and technology reconfigure our understanding of the right to exist. Using her own experiences with Multiple Sclerosis, the video installation reveals how other forms of invisible disabilities, such as dementia, mental illness or imperceptible degenerative neurological diseases, express themselves through movement. Inspired by the artistic work of film makers and choreographers, such as Pina Bauch and Anne De Keersmaeker, Holmes explores the theme of invisible disabilities in “Invisible Presence: Three Expressions of Curiosity.”

  After meandering through the installation’s video sections you may chat with the dancers and each other about the work, and at the conclusion you will be offered the choreographer’s analysis.  Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served.

  Have you ever wanted to try Pilates or perhaps you are looking to share this experience with other member in a gorgeous setting. This is a chance to work out with fellow Newcomers then enjoy a fruit smoothie as your reward. Our instructor for this event is Kelly Poston. She is a top Santa Barbara instructor in Pilates and Yoga. Kelly has taught at the EL Encanto Resort, Montecito Country Club, Equibox and LaCumbre Country Club. She has extensive training from the Joseph Pilates Guild, the Houston Metropolitan Dance and Core Pilates.

  The 1 hour session is designed for all levels with Kelly demonstrating each movement for the beginner to the advanced level. All you need is a yoga mat to participate. Blueberry or strawberry smoothies to be enjoyed after! The class will be held around a heated pool, feel free to jump in when you are done. This fun experience, in a great setting with a wonderful instructor is not to be missed. This event is hosted at a member's home in Montecito.

  Please join fellow Newcomers in one of the most simply rewarding activities we are involved with -- serving dinner and visiting with individuals in our community without homes at the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission.

  Volunteer roles include serving plates, handing out utensils, greeting, drinks, and sitting down & eating with our homeless guests. Nearly 100 people eat dinner at the Rescue Mission each evening!

  Dinner is served between 5:30-6:15 pm. Please arrive between 5:15-5:20 pm. Wear closed toe shoes and appropriate clothing. Gloves will be provided.

  The SB Rescue Mission’s comprehensive programs include family support, addiction education, relapse prevention, transitional housing, career development, and placement. Graduates from the Mission are restored to health and productivity and reenter society as responsible, committed parents and citizens.   With their mix of classic rock, country rock, and solid country favorites, along with plenty of their own originals, this could be the most fun and talented local band (they are three young guys from Ventura) you’ll experience this year! Their music draws people of all ages and in many ways, defies categorizing. They are flat out, just really good!

  The foothills in Santa Barbara support a variety of native trees and shrubs, many of which can look similar at first. We’ll encounter several common woody species and we’ll discuss their unique features, some of their uses, and the roles they play in nature guided by retired biologist Kate Symonds. You’ll come away with some easy ways to identify them. Our 2-3 mile walk is slow-paced on a mostly shaded, gently undulating trail.

  This walk is on the Jesusita Trail that starts at the Cater water treatment plant at the north end of San Roque Road, Santa Barbara. Parking is free, but can be limited. You may need to park down the hill and walk 1/4 mile up the paved road to the trailhead. Please add extra travel time for this possibility. We will gather at the beginning of the Jesusita trailhead and begin our walk at 9 AM. We will be walking up to 2.5 miles on a relatively level trail with a few very short steeper sections. Be prepared for variable weather, bring water, and suggest sun protection  Please no dogs thank you.  Rain cancels (or can be rescheduled).

  Elise Garcia will discuss architectural design elements that provide "passive" heating and cooling that do not require utilities. Elise founded her architectural and interior design firm in 2004, and has over 30 years of experience. She has a passion for sustainable design.

  Join us as we explore More Mesa in Goleta. More Mesa is an undeveloped bluff-top mesa that rests 120 feet above the ocean, with panoramic views from the Santa Ynez Mountains to the Channel Islands. Rare birds, including kites, harriers, and merlins make their home on the Mesa. 

  This is a 2.8-mile loop with little elevation gain. Dogs on leash are welcome. No need to register, just show up. Bring water and sunscreen, there is no shade.   Have you ever wanted to try Pilates or perhaps you are looking to share this experience with other member in a gorgeous setting. This is a chance to work out with fellow Newcomers then enjoy a fruit smoothie as your reward. Our instructor for this event is Kelly Poston. She is a top Santa Barbara instructor in Pilates and Yoga. Kelly has taught at the EL Encanto Resort, Montecito Country Club, Equibox and LaCumbre Country Club. She has extensive training from the Joseph Pilates Guild, the Houston Metropolitan Dance and Core Pilates.

  The 1 hour session is designed for all levels with Kelly demonstrating each movement for the beginner to the advanced level. All you need is a yoga mat to participate. Blueberry or strawberry smoothies to be enjoyed after! The class will be held around a heated pool, feel free to jump in when you are done.   From 1870 until 1901 the secluded outpost that is now Cold Spring Tavern operated as a stagecoach depot for horse-drawn carriages traveling over San Marcos Pass. With the invention of motorized vehicles, the stagecoaches were no longer viable, as the era of the "Wild West" passed into history.

  The old depot and its 40 acres of land were purchased by Adelaide Ovington, a former actress, in 1941. She opened and ran the tavern until her death in 1972 and her descendants run it still.

  Join fellow Newcomers in escaping the May gray.  Explore the grounds, enjoy a delicious lunch (they're famous for their tri-tip sandwiches), and listen to some great live local music on a Saturday afternoon! Check out the Road Gang house where the Chinese immigrants who built the road over the pass slept. Visit the old Ojai Jail, Gopherville, Blisshaven, the Bunkhouse, and the Log Cabin Bar where the music happens.

  Located only about 20 minutes from downtown Santa Barbara, it's literally so close and yet a whole world away. What a stellar way to kick off our summer!

  The 4th annual Newcomers Snow Sports trip to Mammoth brought together new members, longtime newcomers, and alumni in January. For about 4 days we skied, snowboarded, and cross-country skied in groups of similar levels (green/ blue and blue/black runs). Highlights were: the hosted mountain tour, happy hours, lunches, dinners, and great conversations on the ski lifts. 

  The Snow Sports Committee would love to grow our group of Newcomer Snow Sports enthusiasts. So if you like snow sports of any kind (downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, tubing, ice skating, or snowshoeing) please join us at our Spring Social hosted at a member’s private residence (address will be provided upon RSVP). There will be Bavarian-inspired appetizers, wine, home-brewed beer tastings, and other refreshments for you to enjoy. You are encouraged to wear logo-themed attire from your favorite resort!

  SANTA BARBARA CEMETERY TOUR  Join us for a tour of the Santa Barbara Cemetery. We’ll be led by the person who literally wrote the book. David Petry's Santa Barbara Cemetery tour covers 157 years and 65 acres. You’ll learn about the history of the land, cemetery and see some of the folks (hopefully not literally) who rest there. We will start with a visit to the chapel to hear the history of the cemetery and then walk through the grounds, a little over a mile. Wear comfortable walking shoes - we will be out on the grass. You can also bring water, a hat, sunscreen and sweater or jacket.  Cameras and your questions are welcome!

  Parking is on the lane BEHIND the chapel to leave the main drive open for cemetery business. Please join us for one of our monthly Orientation Meetings designed for all those new to Newcomers. This meeting is hosted by the VP's of Membership and is designed to orient you to the SB Newcomers Club, make sure you know how to use the various tools to register for events, connect with other members, and give you tips on how to make the most of your membership. It's also a great time to have all of your questions answered. After we spend about 45 minutes with the orientation, please join us and other SB Newcomers Officers for a "first drink on us" social gathering where we can answer more questions while you can get to know other "Newbie" members attending the orientation.

  The Coal Oil Point Natural Reserve is located adjacent to Isla Vista and the U.C Santa Barbara campus, and is part of the Univ. of California’s Natural Reserve System.  The 170-acre Reserve protects a wide variety of habitats such as beach shoreline, dunes, a tidal estuary, seasonal freshwater wetlands, coastal sage scrub, grassland, and more. 
  

  Thousands of migratory birds visit throughout the year, and the area is home to several rare species, including the western snowy plover.  This time of year we’ll likely see several snowy plover chicks on the beach!  

  We’ll take a level 2-mile loop nature walk guided by a retired biologist who is a docent at the Reserve and also a former Newcomer member.  We’ll find out what makes this natural area so special.  We’ll be walking some of the time on the beach, so wear shoes that you don’t mind getting tar on the soles.  The Reserve has binoculars available for participants, but feel free to bring your own if you have a pair.

  Have you ever wanted to try Pilates or perhaps you are looking to share this experience with other member in a gorgeous setting. This is a chance to work out with fellow Newcomers then enjoy a fruit smoothie as your reward. Our instructor for this event is Kelly Poston. She is a top Santa Barbara instructor in Pilates and Yoga. Kelly has taught at the EL Encanto Resort, Montecito Country Club, Equibox and LaCumbre Country Club. She has extensive training from the Joseph Pilates Guild, the Houston Metropolitan Dance and Core Pilates.

  The 1 hour session is designed for all levels with Kelly demonstrating each movement for the beginner to the advanced level. All you need is a yoga mat to participate. Blueberry or strawberry smoothies to be enjoyed after! The class will be held around a heated pool, feel free to jump in when you are done. This fun experience, in a great setting with a wonderful instructor is not to be missed. This event is hosted at a member's home in Montecito.

  Experience local, visionary architect Jeff Shelton’s “take” on Santa Barbara’s Spanish Revival style on this leisurely, 2-hr. walking tour, which will include six of Jeff’s iconic, downtown buildings, a visit inside his studio, and finish with an exhibition of the exquisite work of renowned SB glassblower Saul Alcaraz, showcased inside Jeff Shelton’s “El Zapato” house.

  Former Newcomer Tish Lynn created the tour - with Jeff’s blessing - and will be your personal guide as you stroll the downtown streets to discover his hidden and not-so-hidden architectural gems.

  After the devastating earthquake of 1925, city leaders committed to re-building the city in the Spanish Revival tradition with plaster work, terra cotta tile roofs, ceramic and cement tiles and iron work.

  Things were fairly tame until local boy - Jeff Shelton - turned it up a notch by creating his own exuberant interpretation of the style. Some call him the “Gaudi” of Santa Barbara. His work is unique and this is the only place to see it. Don’t miss it!

  Join us as we explore the beautiful Santa Barbara harbor by water on a sunny summer Saturday morning. You can choose between a single or double kayak or aquarium paddle board. This is guaranteed to be the highlight of your weekend!

  Rent it for an hour or two from Santa Barbara Sailing. Reserve your kayak or paddle board online at their website: https://sbsail.com/rentals/ or call them at 805-962-2826.

  • Single kayaks rent for $!8 an hour including tax
  • Double kayaks rent for $33.35 including tax
  • Paddleboards rent for $27.67 including tax
