Weekend Amblers: Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve and Seal Sanctuary

  • March 23, 2024
  • 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
  • Viola Fields Park at 6145 Carpinteria Avenue Carpinteria, CA, 93013

Come for an inspiring walk along the Carpinteria Bluffs with its variety of wildlife, coastal sage, and eucalyptus groves. Take in the beauty of the coastline, the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Channel Islands. We will stop at the Seal Sanctuary overlook where we can delight in the community of seals at play or asleep. Hopefully, we will be lucky and be able to see some newborn seal pups! Then we will continue to the tar pits and to the edge of the campground.

This is a relaxing walk at almost three miles round trip and is mostly flat, with some mild uneven terrain. Binoculars are optional for better viewing of the seals.

There's no need to register; just show up! Bring water and sunblock. Dogs are allowed on leash on the trails and the beach, but not at the Seal Rookery Overlook.

After the walk, we plan to enjoy coffee, tea, and treats at the Brass Bird and Kitchen at 4835 Carpinteria Avenue in Carpinteria.

If rain is forecasted for the morning hours, the walk will be cancelled. A determination will be made on the prior evening, and a cancellation notice will be sent to those on the email list if necessary. Those not yet on the mailing list can contact the Committee to be added.

Directions:

Take 101 Freeway South. Exit at Bailard Avenue (Exit 85). Turn right onto Bailard Avenue, and in 200 feet, turn left onto Carpinteria Avenue. The parking lot is 0.1 miles ahead on the right. Look for the red and white Newcomers sign.
