Santa Barbara Newcomers Graduate, Ambassador Gary D. Robbins, will lead a conversation about the nature and uses of diplomacy.

He will touch on these questions and more:
  1. "Why do countries engage in diplomacy?";
  2. "Why do they support 'talking shops' like the OSCE, NATO, and the UN?"; and
  3. "Should I even care when I live in tranquil Santa Barbara?"

Ambassador Robbins served more than 30 years as a Foreign Service Officer -- a career diplomat -- with the State Department.  He was the head of the OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Deputy U.S. Ambassador to the OSCE in Vienna, and the State Department's NATO Director.  Earlier postings included Italy, South Africa, Germany, Spain,The Netherlands, Venezuela and -- his only hardship posting -- Washington.  Before joining the State Department, he was an attorney with the Seattle firm of Graham and Dunn.
