CYCLING:
LOS OLIVOS HAPPY CANYON ROAD
Sunday, April 24th -- 9:30AM - 1:30PM
It is beautiful out in this wine country area with some great biking options. It is well worthwhile to make the 45-minute drive to get out to Los Olivos.
We will meet on Jonata Street in Los Olivos. Directions: Route 154 to Los Olivos, left on Grand Ave, left on Jonata St. across from R Country Market. Or Hwy 101 to Buellton, right on Hwy 246 to 154 and Los Olivos. You can park across from the market although locals prefer we park on the street(s) nearby as this is the only grocery store in town. (There may or may not be porta potties across from the market, but the church a short walk away has good restrooms). Plan on 45 minutes from SB to get out there on Highway 154 or 101/246.
The route follows Roblar Avenue out to Baseline Rd to Happy Canyon Road (which is appropriately named). We will pass Bridlewood Estates and East Valley Vineyards as we meander through a pastoral oak filled canyon with horse and cattle ranches with signs that say “Slow Horses” or “Slow Please (Cows and Calves on Road)”. We will turn around and return along Happy Canyon Road coming back on Baseline Rd, cross over 154 to Refugio Rd and head toward Los Olivos.
There are multiple options for lunch in Los Olivos. [If you are in a more leisurely mood you may want to go to the Roblar Winery at the intersection of Refugio Rd and Roblar Rd for wood oven pizza, charcuterie plates, and possibly a wine flight of their reserve wines (the winery can be very crowded, however; you may have to wait, so allow extra time and patience if you choose this option)].
As often is the case, we have several distance/difficulty ride options to choose from. Meet at 9:15 at the corner of Grand and Jonata in Los Olivos. All options start at 9:30.
Most of the ride is along rolling hills and is relatively flat or a slight grade gradually working to a moderate to difficult grade as you continue up Happy Canyon Road. It is very easy to adjust this ride for your level of riding and disposition of the day.
Option 1: Turn around before Happy Canyon Rd becomes too steep. Wait for the group to return or head back (the option is yours) - 15-20 Miles. Check out the Ride Map
Option 2: Continue up Happy Canyon Rd to the Yellow “fire hazard warning sign” then turn around and head back to Roblar Winery.- 25 Miles. Check out the Ride Map
Option 3: Knock yourself out… ride to the top or all the way around to Figueroa Road, we’ll see you when you get back. - 40 Miles. Check out the Ride Map

The goal of the Cycling Committee is to hold weekly social meetup rides that are open to cyclists of all levels and abilities. Our rides are typically designed to have multiple start points and route segments and a destination that will allow us to relax and chat with our fellow Newcomers and guests after the ride. These rides are 'No Drop', so no riders will be left behind. Whether you are a beginning rider or a Tour de France champion come out and join us as there will usually be something for everyone.
