Buena Vista to Saddle Rock – 8:30am. This hike begins at the Buena Vista trailhead on Park Lane and follows the Old Pueblo Trail to the San Ysidro Trail.  It then connects to Saddle Rock on the McMenemy Trail and loops back on the Girard Trail to McMenemy and old Old Pueblo, returning to the trailhead at Buena Vista. The distance is about 5.3 miles and takes approximately 2 - 2 1/2 hours. Go at your own pace and there are good turn back points such as at the interconnection of the McMenemy and Girard Trails (which would make an approximate 4 mile hike). This is a very scenic trail (total elevation gain 1,100 ft.) that goes through a small Eucalyptus grove and offers views of the ocean, canyons, valleys and creeks. Difficulty: Moderate-Strenuous.

 Directions: From the 101, go north, toward the mountains, on San Ysidro to Hwy 192.  Go right on 192 for 0.8 miles, then take a left on Park Lane.  (Park Lane is easy to miss.  As you get near, you’ll see a “San Ysidro Creek” sign on your right, then look for nine closely spaced Eucalyptus trees on your left.  You’ll turn left after the last one.)  Go 0.3 miles and bear to the right to stay on Park Lane at the Mountain Drive junction.  Go 0.6 miles further on Park Lane to the Buena Vista trailhead on the left. (Note: you will pass the Old Pueblo trailhead sign at 0.5 miles-the hike’s end point). There is good parking before and after the trailhead.
