REFUGIO/EL CAPITAN COASTAL RIDE

14 or 28 MILES

Sunday, April 10th --  8:30AM - 12:00PM

Explore Refugio and El Capitan State Parks and the surrounding areas.  This ride has a lot of variety with spectacular coastal views, winding rural canyon roads, beaches, campgrounds, class one bike paths with rolling hills.

As always there are choices. Please let us know which route option you intend to ride. Both options start at the Refugio exit.

Directions to Start: Exit 101 at Refugio and park on the dirt as you start to go north on Refugio Rd.  Option “A” up to 28 Miles and 2200+ ft of elevation, (moderate to difficult), and Option “B” 14 Mile (Easy).

Option A: Starts 8:30 at Refugio exit.  Ride up Refugio Canyon road, 3 miles with nearly 500 ft of elevation to the Circle Bar B Guest Ranch, a turn of century guest ranch handed down through 4 generations.  For the strong riders, they can continue for up to another 3.8 miles and nearly 1,800 ft of elevation gain (20% grade in some spots). At 9:15 we start our descent back to meet up with the Option “B” group.

Option B: Starts 9:30 ish at Refugio exit.  After meeting up with the Option “A” group at their cars We will explore Refugio State Park with breathtaking coastal views along the Park's bike paths weaving through the campgrounds with beautiful coastal views and coming back along the park roads. The El Capitan end of the bike path is closed due to a washout so we will exit Refugio to ride Calle Real (frontage road north of the freeway) to El Capitan State Park and then retrace our route on the frontage road and can stop for coffee at one of the campgrounds headquarters with a store and bathrooms. Bring your most flexible of attitudes and enjoy the journey.

The goal of the Cycling Committee is to hold weekly social meetup rides that are open to cyclists of all levels and abilities. Our rides are typically designed to have multiple start points and route segments and a destination that will allow us to relax and chat with our fellow Newcomers and guests after the ride. These rides are 'No Drop', so no riders will be left behind. Whether you are a beginning rider or a Tour de France champion come out and join us as there will usually be something for everyone.
