Happy Hikers - Aliso Canyon

  • May 25, 2018
  • 8:30 AM
  • Paradise Road

No Hike if Raining. Bring plenty of water.

This is a Friday 8:30am meetup – no need to register.

Aliso Loop Trail 8:30am.  This a backcountry hike off of Paradise Road.  Aliso Canyon sits on the north side of the Santa Ynez River.  We will start at the Los Prietos Ranger Station (see below) and walk to the Sage Hill Campground where the trail officially begins.  It starts along an interpretive trail on Aliso Creek, then heads up Aliso Canyon, continuously crossing the creek.  The trail eventually climbs up to a grassy plateau.  The return hike along the ridge between Aliso and Oso Canyons includes views of the Santa Ynez River, the valley, and the surrounding mountains.  Distance: 4 miles. Elevation gain: 800’.

DIRECTIONS: From Highway 101 in Santa Barbara, take the State Street/Highway 154 exit.  Turn right onto Highway 154 and drive approximate 10 miles to Paradise Road on the right.  Turn right and continue 4.5 miles to the Los Prietos Ranger Station, on the left.  That is where we will park, and here’s the reason.  The Los Padres National Forest now uses a concessionaire to collect a day use fee of $10, however, that fee only applies when parking in areas that have facilities (campground, rest rooms, etc.).  So, for our backcountry hikes we will tend to use the Ranger Station or roadside parking areas.

Hike Leader: Dave Ellenberger

Hope to see you there!
