Join the Hike at a Relaxed Pace (H.A.R.P.)  & Pop-Up Committees for a Monarch Morning Walk at the Goleta Butterfly Grove in the Sperling Preserve on the Ellwood Mesa in Goleta

Sunday, January 8th at 9:00 am

Thousands of AMAZING monarch butterflies gather in Goleta every winter. Many believe they are orange-and-black-winged souls of their ancestors!

The Butterfly Grove is about 0.8 miles from the parking area. The bluffs and the ocean are 0.3 miles from the Grove. Round trip is about 2.2 miles. The trail is natural with roots and rocks, so please wear appropriate footwear. Also, there are no restrooms or water at the Butterfly Grove.

No need to register - just show up!  Be sure to bring water, sunblock and, if you have them, a pair of binoculars to better spy the butterflies.

Directions: Take Highway 101 North, exit Winchester Canyon Road/Hollister Avenue (Exit #110). At the first stop sign, go straight onto Calle Real, which runs parallel to 101 North (NOTE: Do not exit onto Route 217-Hollister Avenue/Goleta). Turn left at the second stop sign toward Hollister Avenue (which takes you over the highway). Take the first left onto Hollister Avenue and the Butterfly Grove parking lot is on the right. Parking: Park at Sperling Preserve/Ellwood Mesa parking lot on Hollister Avenue. Parking is free. If the lot is full, parking is available at Ellwood School across the street.

Questions? Contact harp@sbnewcomers.org or popup@sbnewcomers.org.

NOTE: The hike will be cancelled if it is raining. The trails are hazardous in wet conditions.
