Hattie Beresford, local historian and journalist, will present a powerpoint lecture entitled "Three Storied Montecito Estates" on Friday, June 12 at 11 am in Casa Covarrubias located at 715 Santa Barbara Street. The transforming walls of Stonehedge saw such notable owners as Hudson River boat pilot, Captain Absalom Anderson,, the tragic Countess Ritter, and the redoubtable Fanny Stevenson, widow of Robert Louis Stevenson. The water gardens of El Fureidîs became a tourist destination as popular as Yosemite, and Anna Dorinda Bliss who created Casa Dorinda led a life filled with music and culture. Their stories, and the story of Montecito itself, are part of the fabric that makes up Santa Barbara and Montecito.
Please arrive at 10:45 for 11:00 start.

Bio:
Local historian Hattie Beresford writes "The Way It Was" column for the Montecito Journal and has published over 300 articles on local history. She has volunteered her time with the Montecito Association History Committee and the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, and worked closely with the latter to produce My Santa Barbara Scrap Book: A Portrait of the Artist Elizabeth Eaton Burton. She has also written "El Mirasol: From Swan to Albatross" and "Santa Barbara Grocers" for Noticias, the quarterly publication of the Santa Barbara Historical Museum. A native of the Netherlands, she taught English and American history for the Santa Barbara School District for 30 years. When she is not immersed in some dusty tome, she can be found on the tennis courts or the  hiking trails or off exploring the history of some other town in the United States or abroad.

After the presentation we can walk to Three Pickles Deli or go to our favorite eatery downtown.  Some parking is available behind the Historical Museum and street or garage parking is also nearby.
