Monetary Rivalry and Geopolitical Ambition

Prof. Cohen will discuss the ermerging monetary rivalry between the US and China as the two vie for economic world dominance. The US Dollar has been the dominant currency on the world stage since World War II, and the issuing country, the US, has enjoyed tremendous economic and political benefits because of this dominance. In recent years, China has started to promote the international standing of the Chinese Yuan. As the Yuan gains international appeal, what would be the consequences for the world, the Chinese, and the US economies?

Prof. Benjamin Jerry Cohen is the Louis G. Lancaster Professor of International Political Economy at UCSB. Previously he held appointments at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, at Princeton University, and at Tufts University. His newest book “Currency Statecraft: Monetary Rivalry and Geopolitical Ambition” was published in December 2018.
