  Join fellow walkers at Hendry's Beach (aka Arroyo Burro Beach County Park) every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 8:40 to walk the beach, visit, make new friends and catch up with old friends, spot whales and dolphins, and get fresh air and exercise. We'll meet at the top of the stairs down to the beach, between The Boathouse restaurant and the lifeguard stand. Some of us walk fast, and some of us stroll. We suggest wearing appropriate shoes to walk on the beach or up to the nearby Douglas Preserve, when the tide is high.   Since 1984, various groups from the Santa Barbara community have been providing dinner for clients of Transition House's Emergency Shelter. This shelter is almost always at capacity and houses families with children.

  Newcomers have committed to providing dinner once every two months. We are looking for 8 volunteers to be part of our team. Join us and prepare a wholesome and delicious meal, and serve it to the Transition House residents with love. Your registration fee will fund the groceries for this meal.

  The Volunteers in Action Committee will coordinate the shopping and preparation tasks. You will work together to cook and serve dinner to approximately 65 residents, as well as pack sack lunches for the next day.

  Transition House seeks to end the cycle of poverty and homelessness for by offering emergency shelter, transitional and permanent housing, homelessness prevention services and comprehensive programs for children.   Step into history with us on a private Santa Barbara Newcomers Club tour of the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum, one of Santa Barbara’s most unique cultural treasures. Housed in a beautiful 1914 neoclassical building that once served as a church, the museum is part of the world’s largest private collection of original manuscripts. The Karpeles Collection includes historic documents, scientific discoveries, music scores, literature, political writings, and religious texts—featuring works by figures such as Mozart, Einstein, Freud, and Lincoln. During our visit, we’ll explore rotating exhibits that bring history to life, highlighting the ideas and events that shaped the world.   Come join the Epicurious Committee's Sustainable Urban Farm Tour and Lunch at Pilgrim Terrace for an informative learning experience of a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) urban farm and blue zone right here in Santa Barbara! Along with the Urban Farm project, Pilgrim Terrace is one of Santa Barbara’s most popular low income housing communities for seniors, families and disabled. This is an Interactive farm tour, which will introduce Newcomer participants to forward thinking Urban farming. During the tour, you will see the farms unique aeroponic towers, a visit to the microgreen greenhouse, as well as, a narration of the farms agroecology practices. At the conclusion of the Urban Farm Tour the Newcomer attendees will be guests at a Harvest-to-Plate lunch. The menu will include: Salmon with green onion remoulade, Polenta, Seasonal Veggies, and a Smoothie.   Please join fellow Newcomers in one of the most simply rewarding activities we are involved with – serving dinner and visiting with individuals in our community without homes.

  Volunteer roles include serving plates, handing out utensils, greeting guests, serving drinks. Nearly 100 people eat dinner at the Rescue Mission every evening!

  Dinner is served between 5:30 pm – 6:15 pm. Please arrive by 5:10. Wear closed-toed shoes and appropriate clothing. Gloves will be provided.

  Being vaccinated against COVID-19 is not required but it is highly encouraged. Masks are not required unless a staff member on duty instructs you to wear one.

  The SB Rescue Mission’s comprehensive programs include family support, addiction education, relapse prevention, transitional housing, career development, and placement. Graduates from the Mission are restored to health and productivity and reenter society as responsible, committed parents and citizens.   Please join us for an intimate conversation with Michael Seabaugh, Santa Barbara novelist and psychotherapist. We'll learn how he created his latest novel "Gwendolyn and Eddie," the story of a traditional wife and a pet monkey with a drinking problem. These are two unforgettable characters. Gwendolyn, raised to yearn for the 1950's domestic dream, but unprepared for the cataclysmic change swept in by the 60's and beyond. And Eddie, who joined the family as a poker prize, as inebriated as the drunk husband who won him, and just as hard to tame. As the decades unfold, Gwendolyn finds her conservative beliefs challenged by the realities of racism, homophobia, traditional masculinity, the sexual revolution, and the struggle for women's rights. Eddie becomes her unexpected confidant and her solace. The story of Gwendolyn and Eddie is ultimately about cages-the ones we are born into, those we construct for ourselves, and the ones we impose on those we love.   No hike if it is raining - bring plenty of water!

  San Ysidro Trail to Saddle Rock   This hike begins at the San Ysidro trail and then connects over to Saddle Rock on the McMenemy trail and loops back west on the Girard trail back to the McMenemy trail. The distance is about 4.5 miles and will take approximately 2 - 2 1/2 hours. Go at your own pace and there are good turn back points at the interconnection of the McMenemy and Girard Trails (which would make an approximately 3 mile hike). Total elevation gain 1,100 ft.  As you traverse over to Saddle Rock there are views of ocean, canyons, valleys and creeks. This is a more difficult hike especially in the heat but there are options to turn around before the steepest section. You may want to bring hiking poles.

  DIRECTIONS: Meet at the San Ysidro trail head on Mountain Drive just east of San Ysidro Ranch. From either direction, exit Fwy 101 at San Ysidro Rd and turn toward the mountains. Go 1.0 mile to East Valley Rd (CA 192) and turn right.  Continue 0.9 miles to Park Lane and turn left. (Park Lane is easy to miss.  Look for Eucalyptus trees on your left.  You’ll turn left after the last one.) Go 0.4 miles and as Park Lane turns right, you veer left onto East Mountain Drive. The trailhead is 0.2 miles ahead on the right.  Park on East Mountain.

CA, one block from the ocean, featuring our high-quality craft beer, rotating guest taps, wine, sparkling wine, and cider. Locally sourced ingredients are vital to our menu.   It's about to start getting dark early and we still want to have fun and meet new friends! The evening includes an opportunity for first time pickleball players to receive group instruction with Dynamite coaches. There will be one hour of instruction and one hour of play for beginners.

  For non-beginners rated 2 DUPR and above, there will be an organized round robin. Partners will be assigned and rotated in a format that creates fun and even play. There will be two hours of round robin play which will be enough for 4-6 games and the format can be adjusted to accommodate number of players and skill level to ensure everyone has a fun and competitive evening.

  Anyone who has tried to share their “life story” knows that both craft and art are involved. Newcomer Tristine Rainer will facilitate a writers’ workshop to explore the craft of memoir writing – no experience necessary other than having your own “life story.” Tristine will show us that through story we find meaning in our lives worth passing on. In this workshop you will be guided through writing exercises that will give you an outline for an autobiographical work that will hold others’ interest. You will have an opportunity to learn what genre of memoir your story falls into and to ask ethical, family legacy, legal and publishing questions from a professional memoir coach. Bring something to write on and write with – a journal, laptop or just pen and paper. Coffee and light refreshments will be provided Tristine Rainer, Ph.D. taught memoir and non-fiction narrative in the Masters of Professional Writing Program at USC for eleven years, authored two classic books on autobiographical writing (continuously in print through Penguin/Random House), wrote and produced award winning TV movies, and published her own critically acclaimed memoir.

Committee has recruited hosts/hostesses from the Newcomer membership who will open their homes and dining tables to 6-8 lucky diners who sign up on Tuesday morning (sign up quickly, avoid the Wait List) . Here's how it works: Our hosts have agreed to welcome Newcomers for the evening. They will coordinate with their guests to define the plan for the evening, sometimes identifying a theme for dinner. Hosts provide tableware, glasses and water, and also provide at least one of the dishes. Each guest brings his or her own beverage of choice and a dish as coordinated with the host (e.g., appetizer, entree, side, dessert, or whatever!) Each guest must register; if you are a couple, both persons must register. Everyone... pitches in to make the event as fun and memorable as possible! Sharing a meal you helped create is one of the best ways to turn Newcomers into New Friends!

Explore Ecology’s monthly beach cleanups take place at Arroyo Burro Beach, one of Santa Barbara’s most gorgeous beaches.   Let's kick off the holiday season by de-stressing with the Weekend Amblers for a lovely little fall walk along the San Antonio Creek Trail. This easy, level trail winds through the forest from Tucker’s Grove Park to the creek crossing for 1.5 miles roundtrip. We’ll pass through shady woodlands of oaks, sycamores, and bay laurel with plenty of opportunities for lovely fall photos. (In case of rain, this event will be cancelled.) From Santa Barbara, drive northbound on Highway 101 and exit at Turnpike Road in Goleta. Turn right (north) and go 0.6 miles to Cathedral Oaks Road. The Tucker’s Grove Park entrance is straight ahead (4800 Cathedral Oaks Road). Bear to the right through the parking lot and go 0.3 miles to the last parking lot, where you will see the red Newcomers sign. Dogs are welcome on leash on the trail.   Parma Park was owned by the Parma family from the 1800s until it was gifted to the city of Santa Barbara in 1973. You can still see remains of the olive grove planted by the Parma's in the 1890s. Parma Park offers panoramic views of the Cielito neighborhood and all the way down to the ocean. An olive grove left by the land’s former owners, the Parma family, is recovering nicely after devastating fire damage from the Tea Fire of 2008. This week we will explore Parma Park with two hikes on Friday morning. Our total hike is approximately 4 miles with 750 elevation gain and considered moderate. The terrain is modulated with reasonably challenging ups and downs. We will start with a loop on the fire road for about 2.5 miles and finish with an out/back to West Mountain Rd of 1.5 miles.

  We will meet at the main entrance to the park at the intersection of 192 (Stanwood Rd) and Parma Rd.

  Gallup & Stribling Orchids was established in 1954 in Carpinteria, California with humble beginnings and ambitious dreams. Aleck Stribling, a horticulturalist with a passion for orchids, was a skilled carpenter by trade and crafted wood-framed greenhouses to house his orchid collection. Aleck partnered with Emmet and Gary Gallup, a father and son with minds for business and orchid breeding. Together, Gallup and Stribling built one of the world’s most prized orchid collections. In 1967, the Van Wingerden “Dutch Brothers” of the Netherlands immigrated to the United States. They settled in Carpinteria and became renowned nurserymen cultivating distinctive orchids, cut flowers, and produce. Today, with the spirit of entrepreneurship, horticultural knowledge, and a passion for agriculture, father and son proprietors, Case and Alex Van Wingerden, proudly carry on the legacy of Gallup& Stribling Orchids.   Trail Overview: Starting at the San Ysidro Trailhead, McMenemy Trail is a moderate hike with an elevation gain of about 1,055 feet. The full loop takes roughly 2 hours and 10 minutes to complete, winding through oak groves, wildflowers, and panoramic vistas. Parking is limited along the road near the trailhead, so carpooling is encouraged.

  Scenic Highlights: The first half of the trail features an uphill climb with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and, on clear days, the Channel Islands. Along the way, you’ll enjoy a mix of shaded paths and open ridgelines that showcase the natural beauty of Santa Barbara’s backcountry.

  Step onto a living piece of Santa Barbara history on a small-group hike across the private, 100-acre Bjorklund Ranch. We’ll follow a winding ranch road into a hidden ravine where a thirty-foot waterfall spills into an enchanting pool. Four generations have shaped this land: Robert Wilson Hyde, the illuminator who helped spark the city’s arts movement; his son Bobby, catalyst of Mountain Drive’s bohemian community; Angy, whose white-tipi salons, spinning songs, and creekside workshops kept the spirit alive; and today Robert Bjorklund with Harmony and Savanna, who steward the trees, craft with reclaimed wood, and welcome guests to glamp beneath the stars. Along the way, you may glimpse Chumash carvings and cultural traces, as well as prehistoric fossils embedded in the rock. This is a true adventure: the trail is unmaintained, footing can be loose, and numerous large boulders must be carefully scrambled, so sturdy shoes, free hands, and sure footing are essential. Come ready to move, to pause, and to listen; the waterfall is the reward, and the legacy under your boots is the reason. Space is limited to protect the land—claim your spot. This is a guided experience. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed and a moderate level of fitness is needed. Hikers should be able to walk continuously for 2-2:30 hours on uneven terrain.

We’ll provide a delicious box lunch picnic outdoors on the college campus, followed by a private, guided tour of the current exhibition of a show featuring prints and three-dimensional works by sculptors from the Museum's permanent collection. In a dynamic dialogue between dimensions, Between Planes: Exploring Sculpture Through Print investigates form, line, and volume in both mediums, offering a unique perspective into the minds of these acclaimed sculptors.   The afternoon will begin with a tour of The Unity Shoppe, then volunteers will participate in the activities stated above. The event concludes with holiday cheer over wine and cheese.

  The Unity Shoppe is a Santa Barbara-based nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free essential services to residents impacted by temporary conditions of poverty, natural disasters, or a health crisis. The organization provides residents with groceries, clothing, toys for tots, and other essentials, as well as job training. These services help reinforce human dignity and encourage self-sufficiency and independence for thousands of local families and individuals each year.   A Newcomers Twofer! First, we’ll meet up at SBNC’s TGIF, taking place at Yellow Belly Tap. We’ll have delicious offerings from Yellow Belly’s Happy Hour menu to choose from, and of course a great time chatting with Newcomer friends. At around 6:30, we’ll head over to the Jurkowitz theater on the SBCC campus for a 7:30 student showcase production of Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberly.

  A sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice set two years after the novel ends, Miss Bennet continues the story of the delightful Bennet sisters with a gathering of the family at Pemberly (where Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth now live) for a holiday celebration. Centering around the slightly bookish middle-sister Mary who fears she’ll always be alone, the play delivers several Christmas miracles including an unexpected guest who may be just the intellectual match for whom Mary has dreamed.

  Please join fellow Newcomers in one of the most simply rewarding activities we are involved with – serving dinner and visiting with individuals in our community without homes. Volunteer roles include serving plates, handing out utensils, greeting guests, serving drinks. Nearly 100 people eat dinner at the Rescue Mission every evening! Dinner is served between 5:30 pm – 6:15 pm. Please arrive by 5:10. Wear closed-toed shoes and appropriate clothing. Gloves will be provided. Being vaccinated against COVID-19 is not required but it is highly encouraged. Masks are not required unless a staff member on duty instructs you to wear one. The SB Rescue Mission’s comprehensive programs include family support, addiction education, relapse prevention, transitional housing, career development, and placement. Graduates from the Mission are restored to health and productivity and reenter society as responsible, committed parents and citizens.   Join the delightful Shanan Harrell*, our Sound Bath performer, as she returns to Newcomers for another beautiful outdoor experience by the ocean. Enjoy a Sound Bath as she brings this expertise to us. Her intention for the time together: first, we will get comfortable and quiet ourselves with a brief meditation, then, with the first ring of the chimes, strike of the bowl, and peal of the gong, ancient instruments will serve as a vibratory portal to a sense of peace and ease, directing your consciousness to that sweet spot of silent stillness. Yes, please! The session will last 45 minutes, or less, followed by a quiet gathering. Wear comfortable clothes and please bring a mat or blanket for the ground (and pillows to make yourself comfy). We will also have chairs for those who prefer to sit. Coffee, tea, and pastries afterwards! *SHANAN HARRELL is a decades-long student and teacher of yoga and meditation. She is the founder of the Tehachapi Yoga Tribe and author of Stumbling Towards Enlightenment: A Yoga 101 Collection. We’ll start out in Colette’s atelier and gallery for a viewing of her large mural landscapes and ethereal forest-scapes, some of which are transformed into high-end wallpaper by the famous F. Schumacher & Company. Colette describes her art as “a very personal thing. I’m drawn to nature.   Please join fellow Newcomers in one of the most simply rewarding activities we are involved with – serving dinner and visiting with individuals in our community without homes.

  Volunteer roles include serving plates, handing out utensils, greeting guests, serving drinks. Nearly 100 people eat dinner at the Rescue Mission every evening!

  Dinner is served between 5:30 pm – 6:15 pm. Please arrive by 5:10. Wear closed-toed shoes and appropriate clothing. Gloves will be provided.

  Being vaccinated against COVID-19 is not required but it is highly encouraged. Masks are not required unless a staff member on duty instructs you to wear one.

  The SB Rescue Mission’s comprehensive programs include family support, addiction education, relapse prevention, transitional housing, career development, and placement. Graduates from the Mission are restored to health and productivity and reenter society as responsible, committed parents and citizens.   Santa Barbara Newcomers Club is the largest social club in all of Santa Barbara! We have over 650 members and typically have over 80 events each month. In Berkeley, California, in 1944, Homicide Detective Al Sullivan has just left the swanky Claremont Hotel after a drink in the bar when a presidential candidate is assassinated in one of the rooms upstairs.   Join Old and New Friends for a Casual Happy Hour!

  Spend three hours on a beautiful weekend afternoon meeting new friends and enjoying wine, beer, sodas, and delicious catered appetizers. 

  Sunday Social events are designed to introduce our newest members (aka Newbies) to current club members, and for current members to mingle with old and new friends. It’s a great way to meet new people and learn a little more about our wonderful community.  All club members are welcome to register.
