    Mah Jongg

Mah Jongg is a game of both skill and luck that originated in China many centuries ago and was brought to the West in the 1920's.   The excitement of Mah Jongg lies in the decisions that you will constantly have to make. Is it preferable to discard a tile and thus gain an advantage, or would it be more prudent to stay with a decent hand? There is the exhilaration of winning a hand as well as regret at not having been bold enough to have made a different choice. Like poker, you will learn a lot about your opponents as you play Mah Jongg and adjust your strategy according to their strengths and weaknesses.

Come play!  All you need is the 2018 American Mah Jongg Card, and a basic knowledge of the game, and you’ll be ready to play!  Invite your Mah Jongg playing friends to come, too!

If you already know the game and want to meet new players, we invite you to drop in and join us!

You can email us with any questions if you need more information, at: mahjongg@sbnewcomers.org

High Sierra Grill collects $5/player at the time of play to help cover the cost of the Mah Jonggers utilizing the space.  Plan on staying after to celebrate your Mah Jongg wins at the High Sierra Grill happy hour afterward.

Keep an eye open for the Newcomer Mah Jongg training, we will be offering learning events for new players, players that haven’t played in a while, and players who want to learn the finer points of playing for money.

This is an evening book club for those who like to prepare/buy food, eat, chitchat and focus on the book by analyzing the characters, plot development, themes, style, purpose etc.

This is a potluck event. Attendees bring their own beverage of choice and a dish as coordinated with the host (e.g., appetizer, entree, side, dessert, etc.). If you need to cancel, please arrange to deliver your dish or send 'take out.'

    A bit about the book:

If you knew the date of your death, how would you live your life? It's 1969 in New York City's Lower East Side, and word has spread of the arrival of a mystical woman, a traveling psychic who claims to be able to tell anyone the day they will die. The Gold children four adolescents on the cusp of self-awareness sneak out to hear their fortunes. The prophecies inform their next five decades. Golden-boy Simon escapes to the West Coast, searching for love in '80s San Francisco; dreamy Klara becomes a Las Vegas magician, obsessed with blurring reality and fantasy; eldest son Daniel seeks security as an army doctor post-9/11; and bookish Varya throws herself into longevity research, where she tests the boundary between science and immortality.A sweeping novel of remarkable ambition and depth, The Immortalists probes the line between destiny and choice, reality and illusion, this world and the next. It is a deeply moving testament to the power of story, the nature of belief, and the unrelenting pull of familial bonds.

    AFTERNOON BOOK CLUB Presents...

    January 2nd, 2019

    1 pm to 3 pm

    The Paris Wife

    By Paula McLain

Chicago, 1920: Hadley Richardson is a quiet twenty-eight-year-old who has all but given up on love and happiness—until she meets Ernest Hemingway. Following a whirlwind courtship and wedding, the pair set sail for Paris, where they become the golden couple in a lively and volatile group—the fabled “Lost Generation”—that includes Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Though deeply in love, the Hemingways are ill prepared for the hard-drinking, fast-living, and free-loving life of Jazz Age Paris. As Ernest struggles to find the voice that will earn him a place in history and pours himself into the novel that will become The Sun Also Rises, Hadley strives to hold on to her sense of self as her roles as wife, friend, and muse become more challenging. Eventually they find themselves facing the ultimate crisis of their marriage—a deception that will lead to the unraveling of everything they’ve fought so hard for.
