    Mah Jongg

Mah Jongg is an ancient Chinese game with tiles. The game was adapted to the American version in the 1930's.  Newcomers, graduates, and friends all play together every Monday at High Sierra Grill/Bar,  521 Firestone, Goleta.  This is located next to the airport at Hollister/Augustus Griggs Place. Please bring your active Mah Jongg playing card and $5 for the use of the room. There is a "happy hour" starting at 4:00 for those of use who want to stick around and socialize.

If you have never even seen the game before, you are encouraged to sign up for training which is held once per month. We will be happy to help you learn.

If you already know the game and want to meet players within our community, just drop in and join us. You can email us with any questions if you need more information.

    • See event details (Hendry's Beach)

Join us at Hendry's Beach (aka Arroyo Burro Beach County Park) every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 8:45. We walk the beach, visit, make new friends and catch up with old friends, spot whales and dolphins and get fresh air and exercise. Some of us walk fast, and some of us stroll. Then we gather at the picnic tables and visit some more. Sometimes there is food to share.

    Contact stridebythetide@sbnewcomers.org with any questions.

Beach/Arroyo Burro is just west of the intersection of Cliff Drive and Las Positas Rd. (exit 100 on freeway). There is a large parking lot. We meet at the top of the stairs next to Boathouse at Hendry's Beach restaurant, 2981 Cliff Dr., Santa Barbara. The restaurant is located at the end of the parking lot right next to the ocean.

    "Obscure Wines of California"

                                   NEBBIOLO Vine Leaf

This event will be held at a stunning downtown location and will be presented by Matt Kettmann. A fifth generation Californian originally from San Jose, Matt Kettmann covers California’s Central Coast and South Coast for the 'Wine Enthusiast' magazine. He is also the senior editor of The Santa Barbara Independent, where he’s worked since 1999, has written for the New York Times, Time Magazine, Wine Spectator, and Smithsonian, and co-founded New Noise Santa Barbara, a music festival.

We will be focusing on 8 wines that may be new to you and are made from grapes growing in various vineyards in California. Harrington Wines range from Mendocino south to Paso Robles. Come and find out the history of why these grapes were chosen to be grown now and are expanding the list of varietals here in our wine state.

Harrington Wines is a small producer vinifying many of the exceptional obscure grapes of California as well as producing clean, stable wines made with low sulfite additions. Gentle, small-lot fermentations and an old-school, wood basket press help to fashion aromatic, focused, precise wines. The current portfolio includes such unusual varieties as Nebbiolo, Corvina, Trousseau, Lagrein, Aglianico, Alvarelhao, Montepulciano and Mission.

Find out how climate changes are now making it possible to grow “old world” varietals in parts of California that might not have been favorable for growing in the past.

    Appetizers will be served!
