Everyone Welcome... Runners, Run/Walkers, and Walkers!

We meet every Saturday at 8am to run, jog, or walk together and then go for breakfast!

The routes we take allow you to go as far or as short a distance as you wish. We typically run out and back (for about an hour or so)... some go 4 miles, others 6 or 7 miles, and some go even farther since they're training for full or half marathons.

We typically meet at Stearns Wharf by the restrooms near the Dolphin Fountain.  Look for the BRIGHT PINK hat! Park on Anacapa Street and walk to the wharf.  Breakfast afterwards at Lucky Penny, 127 Anacapa St!

    See you there!

If you are joining SB Striders for the first time, please email us (sbstriders@sbnewcomers.org) so we don't leave you behind if you arrive late.

We vary the starting locations and routes, so please remember to check the Newcomers calendar, the Santa Barbara Striders Facebook page, and/or Meetup for details.

Steve Hermann Hotels and Restaurants has created an old world European Grand Cafe designed to be an instant classic. Following on the heels of the meteoric success of L’Horizon Resort and Spa, the #1 Resort in California according to Conde Nast magazine, Somerset is our marquee restaurant brand. Absolutely timeless, the interior is both classic and modern simultaneously, with references to a “Grand Cafe" one would find in London or Paris. Boasting deep chesterfield sofas, polished zinc table tops, and 50’s modern vintage chairs and lighting, the space comfortably mixes mid century and art deco influences. Somerset's stunning interior is anchored by its courtyard featuring a large stone fireplace that draws you toward the patio where you are enveloped by a canopy of 100 year old olive trees that are situated in rubble stone planters. The whole feel of the patio was designed to be that of an old courtyard in Tuscany. That vintage feel throughout the restaurant is complimented by modern touches creating a symbiotic relationship to its main star—the cuisine.

Somerset’s kitchen is helmed by star Chef, Lauren Herman. Herman was the former chef de cuisine at the preeminent L.A. favorites, A.O.C. and Lucques. She has taken her vast experience to anchor the restaurant’s state-of-the-art kitchen with her unique focus on farm-driven California cuisine with light French and Italian influences. Though steeped in classical European techniques, Somerset represents the zeitgeist of culinary exploration and farm to table California dining. Somerset sources all produce within a 100 mile radius, and takes advantage of the bounty that is the Santa Barbara coast by utilizing local fish mongers daily deliveries, and livestock humanely raised on ranches in the hills above America’s Rivera. Joining Herman in the kitchen is her wife, Sous Chef Christina Olufson, former Executive Pastry Chef of the Lucques Group. Whether stopping by for one of our carefully crafted cocktails, or indulging in Somerset’s fine dining menu in the intimacy of the garden courtyard, a truly unique experience.

This new favorite hot spot opened last December and is a perfect place for our group to meet and have fun.

Wine Down Wednesday events are open to Newcomers and Graduates. Attendees must RSVP in advance and are allowed to bring a friend along. This is a drop-in event. Afterwards stay for dinner. Why wait till the weekend to relax with friends and wine? Wednesday's just got better.

    What's Up with Qatar?

Is There Room for Shades of Gray in a Black and White Covfefe World?

As the world's top exporter of liquefied natural gas, Qatar has used its immense wealth to court relations from Washington to London and Tokyo.  Though a U.S. ally, Qatar has been pursuing an independent foreign policy with objectives that diverge from those of Saudi Arabia and other members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (“GCC”).

Because Qatar and Iran share an oil field, Qatar has a closer relationship with Iran than other Sunni states do.  In addition, it has a history of reaching out to (and funding) various controversial groups, including the Muslim Brotherhood, the Taliban, Hamas, and rebels in Sudan's Darfur region.

Qatar touts itself as a neutral player that can act as an intermediary in regional conflicts.  But Saudi Arabia and other critics slam Qatar for “playing both sides,” funding radical Islamist groups, and using its Al Jazeera television network as a propaganda tool to meddle in regional affairs.

But as they say, “It’s complicated.”  Qatar has fought alongside the U.S. and Saudi Arabia in various military conflicts and is home to a huge U.S. airbase, which is a crucial hub for the air campaign against ISIS.

On June 5, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and several other GCC states broke diplomatic relations with Qatar.  Spokesmen at the Pentagon and State Department have sought to remain neutral and diffuse the situation.  In contrast, President Trump is claiming credit, tweeting that his recent visit to Saudi Arabia is "already paying off" and that the break might mark the "beginning of the end to the horror of terrorism."

We will discuss these breaking developments and consider whether it is possible for any country in the Middle East to play the kind of “neutral” role claimed by Qatar.

This subject is not covered in Great Decisions.  We will supply links to relevant readings.  However, the story is unfolding daily in print, online, and on air.

    SAN YSIDRO TO THE FALLS

    NO HIKING IF RAINING

    [Thomas Lee - Hike Leader]

Remember to take lots of water!

No need to Register, just meet at Trailhead

8:30 AM The trail heads up the picturesque San Ysidro Canyon, following the creek. This steep, canyon is now filled with small waterfalls and running water, making wonderful sounds to accompany the hike. Hike will end at the 60-foot waterfall, which as of Wednesday afternoon was falling beautifully. Hiking Distance: 3.8 miles round trip; Elevation gain: 1000 feet; Hiking Time: 2-2.5 hours (go at your pace).  Difficulty: Moderate- strenuous.  At the falls, the usual stop point, several hikers usually extend the hike up towards east Camino Cielo Rd.  This is an option for anyone interested.

DIRECTIONS: Meet at the San Ysidro trail head on Mountain Drive just east of San Ysidro Ranch. From either direction, exit Fwy 101 at San Ysidro Rd and turn toward the mountains. Go 1.0 mile to East Valley Rd (CA 192) and turn right.  Continue 0.9 miles to Park Lane and turn left. (Park Lane is easy to miss.  As you get near, you’ll see a “San Ysidro Creek” sign on your right, then look for nine closely spaced Eucalyptus trees on your left.  You’ll turn left after the last one.) Go 0.4 miles and as Park Lane turns right, you veer left onto East Mountain Drive. The trailhead is 0.2 miles ahead on the right.  Park on East Mountain.

     HIKE LEADER: Thomas Lee

    Hope to see you there!

    • Endless Summer Bar & Cafe - 113 Harbor Way, Ste 180, SB

Please join us at one of TGIF's favorite summer venues, Endless Summer Bar & Café!

Named to SUNSET MAGAZINE's list of "Top Ten Seafood Spots by the Sea." The Endless Summer bar-cafe has vintage surfboards hanging everywhere, surf videos from all over the world (of course including "The Endless Summer"), and fresh seafood straight from the local fishermen's market. Many of the local fishermen stop here to 'talk story' at day's end over a Rincon Burger or Halibut Tacos, washed down with a mai-tai or an Endless Summer Blonde Ale.

The Endless Summer film made in the early sixties helped define the genre and mirrored the surf culture, which has become such a part of the California lifestyle.  Stop by The Endless Summer and get a taste of that spirit. And, by the way, Endless Summer filmmaker Bruce Brown might be sitting next to you, scarfing down some fresh Oysters on the Half Shell.

Come meet new friends and enjoy wine, beer & cocktails.

It's never too late to have a happy childhood.  Set your inner kid free as we sit around the natural setting of a consciously designed, yet cozy outdoor fire pit at the Mission Canyon home of a fellow Newcomer.  We will be drawn in by the compelling yarns and penny whistle stylings of master storyteller Bryan Snyder.

Bryan Snyder grew up exploring the rolling hills and shady creeks of upstate New York. A year abroad in Scotland was filled with hitchhiking in the highlands and journeys to ruined castles.  This ignited his ongoing affinity for outdoor adventures, great and small.

His various close encounters with cliffs, storms, and wildlife over the years, led to an opportunity to write a column, “Off The Map”, in Chenango County, New York’s Evening Sun newspaper. Bryan has also taught natural science to young students at various environmental schools, from Maine to Hawaii.  He has also  authored several books before settling here in Santa Barbara.

Arrive at 7:30 for drinks and hors d'oeuvres.  Sunset is at 8 pm.  Stories commence at 8:15

    Please consider carpooling, limited parking.

FOTM is a regional non profit program that documents extraordinary local, national and international artists and their work.

Part of the documentation process is their monthly meet-the-artist "Spotlight Series" in which FOTM founder Donna Granata conducts a filmed interview, (similar to the Actor's Studio), before a live audience for archival purposes, as well as for future broadcasts. FOTM's archive has been utilized by art scholars and researchers since 1994.

The subject of this month's interview is Porfirio Gutierrez, an artist steeped in the weaving traditions of the Zapotec people of Oaxaca, Mexico, divides his time between that region, where his family lives, and Ventura, where he has a studio. Employing methods long used by weavers in Oaxaca and materials prepared by family members, he weaves rugs and tapestries in both traditional and contemporary designs. Gutierrez was one of four artists selected by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian for the 2016 Artist Leadership Program. More than half a million readers have fallen in love with the New York Times bestseller, A Gentleman in Moscow

He can’t leave his hotel. You won’t want to.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Rules of Civility—a transporting novel about a man who is ordered to spend the rest of his life inside a luxury hotel

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count’s endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.

    • Ty Lounge at the Biltmore - 1260 Channel Dr.

Please join us for another great event at one of TGIF's favorite venues, the Ty Lounge at the Four Seasons Biltmore.

Off the Resort Lobby, lit with glowing Italian onyx and massive hand-blown glass chandeliers, Ty Lounge invites guests to enjoy signature drinks and classic cocktails in front of the fireplace or on the ocean view terrace around the fire pit. Featuring wall to wall Persian hand-knotted carpets, rondel glass, artfully hand-painted walls and ceilings, the Lounge stirs up feelings of the Spanish Colonial revival of the 1920s for a guest lounging in the leather and nail head chairs. Ever present staff offer a sizeable menu of Spanish tapas by candlelight. Wines include a thoughtful selection of hard-to-find Spanish wines by the glass along with fine local vintages.

Most Friday evenings you can enjoy the velvety jazz sounds of singer-songwriter Lois Mahalia. Mahalia’s first big single, Smile, burst onto the YouTube scene with over 1.75 million hits, and she has since gone on to perform, record and tour as a backing vocalist with such artists as Joe Walsh, Kenny Loggins, Joe Sample and Norman Gimble.

Join us as we explore an exciting, creative, and highly interactive exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art (at the top of the Paseo Nuevo complex downtown). A docent will lead a tour of the exhibit, Free Play, which  centers around the idea of play as an essential element of the design process, producing work which intimately reveals our drive toward novelty, upending traditional notions about the role of design in our lives. This sense of freedom results in works that are wonderfully illogical, whimsical, and poignant. Free Play suggests how looking at the products of play rather than necessity reveals more about how we got here and where we’re going.

The exhibit's design, by Berlin-based Sam Chermayeff Office, is a labyrinth of personal moments and stories. The impressive lineup of creators included in the exhibition features names such as Maarten Baas, Design Miami’s 2009 Designer of the Year; Nendo, named Designer of the Year by Wallpaper MagazineElle Decor and Maison & Objet in 2015; LA-based Jimenez Lai, founder of Bureau Spectacular; and Snarkitecture, whose installation piece The Beach has been touring globally since 2015.

P.S. This is a great event for Newcomers who work downtown - you can duck out for lunch and join us!

    • Bar 29 - 1134 Chapala St

Newcomers is returning to one of Santa Barbara's newest restaurants and bars. Join us as we return to Bar 29.

Bar 29 opened January 18th this year and is the first restaurant concept of Kourtney and Phil Wright, who also own Whiskey Richards at 435 State St. and The Sportsman at 20 W. Figueroa St.  “Because the businesses that we had were cocktail-only with no food, we noted the trend toward people wanting to eat and drink at the same time,” Kourtney Wright said. “We were ready to do something else.”

On the menu are small plates of “elevated bar food” that include deviled eggs, poutine, polenta with short ribs, wagyu beef sliders and rum raisin rice pudding. “It’s been amazing,” Wright said. “We have been really proud of the food and drinks and the staff.”

The restaurant’s name comes from the atomic number of copper: 29. The bar where patrons sit was already copper, Wright said, and during the one month the location was dark, they removed and replaced the whole back bar with copper.

    Here's how Dining In works!

Enjoy a casual potluck dinner party in a private home with your fellow Newcomers. Join in as either Host or Guest. (The Committee especially welcomes new Host homes. Really!) It can be anything from a formal dinner to a casual cocktails-plus-appetizers event. You can choose to have a special theme too! Each party involves anywhere from 6-14 guests (hosts decide). We’ve had foodie events, vegan meals, and even singles parties. All kinds of dinner parties! The most important objective is to have fun with new friends!

    • Hosts... offer their home as the setting for the event. They will coordinate with their guests to define the plan for the evening. Hosts provide tableware, glasses and water, and can  also provide one of the dishes if they would like.
    • Guests... bring their own beverages of choice and a dish as coordinated with the host (e.g., appetizer, entree, side, dessert, or whatever!)
    • Everyone... plan to come and pitch in to make the event as fun and memorable as possible! Sharing a meal you helped create is one of the best ways to turn Newcomers into New Friends!
So what happens after you sign up? The committee will contact you to learn more about what kind of event interests you the most. We do our best to match up newcomers with shared interests (but remember, everyone’s different!). About ten days before the event, we will send you your Hosts’ name and address. The Hosts will contact you to finalize a plan for the evening.

If you'd like to be a future Host (yes!) or have questions, please contact the committee chair at sipsup@newcomers.org

    Bon Appetit!

PLEASE NOTE: When you register for this event, your fellow Newcomers are counting on you to attend the event and to bring the dish (appetizer, entree, side, or dessert) agreed upon with your host.  Should you find that you have to cancel after accepting your assignment, you must identify a replacement Newcomer Guest or deliver your dish to your Host’s home on the day of the event.  Please work with your host and the committee to make sure the event can go on as planned in your absence! Hint: if you have scheduling pressures, consider using SBMenus.com.  For a small fee (about $5) they will deliver an item you purchase from one of many SB restaurants directly to your Host’s home on the day of the event.

[Hikers on Saddle Rock - April 21]

8:30AM Friday morning. No hike if raining.  No need to register, just show up.  This hike begins at the Buena Vista trailhead on Park Ln, goes to the end of the Buena Vista trail, goes left at a split to a little uphill connector to meet the Romero cat way, then goes west downhill on the Romero cat way, meets the lower part of the San Ysidro trail, then goes east on the Old Pueblo trail to end near the start point on Park Ln. Total distance is @2.9 miles.  This is a scenic loop, not difficult hike, (total elevation gain 850ft), with views of beautiful homes, ocean, canyons, valleys and creeks.  There are many extensions available for those wishing to make the hike longer and or harder.  From the 101, go north, toward the mountains, on San Ysidro to Hwy 192.  Go right on 192 for @.8mile, then take a left on Park Ln.  Go .3 miles and bear to the right to stay on Park Ln at Mountain Dr. junction.  Go .6 miles further on Park Ln to the Buena Vista trailhead on the left. Please join us at another fun venue on the TGIF tour, Test Pilot. One of the Funk Zone's most unusual spots, Test Pilot is owned by the same folks who hosted us at the Good Lion a few weeks back.

Don’t let the kitschy glasses with their totem pole faces fool you. While Test Pilot is indeed tiki-inspired, this new Funk Zone hotspot is not mired in the Polynesian motif of yesteryear. “We didn’t want it to be a classics bar,” said Brandon Ristaino, who owns this establishment as well as The Good Lion on State Street with his wife, Misty. “We wanted to modernize the drinks, clean them up, dry them out. In some, we switched out the rum.”

They have two drinks any craft cocktail aficionado should savor: El Presidente and the slyly named Suisse Family Robinson.

Toward a Trump Foreign Policy:  Are We There Yet?

President Trump remains harshly critical of traditional -- and bipartisan -- US foreign policy, but his senior national security and economic advisers emphasize continuity.  Is a coherent policy emerging, or is it the "adhocracy" that critics claim?  How does this affect America's traditional allies?  Its adversaries?   Will the US remain a global leader?

Gary Robbins, retired career State Department officer, will lead a discussion evaluating the President’s actions in the context of US foreign policy since WWII.  Participants will be given a small selection of articles before the event and will be encouraged to participate actively in the discussion.

After the tour, we'll return to the courtyard for small appetizers and wine/beverages where we can socialize, ask questions, and learn about volunteer opportunities.

Lucky’s has been honoring the classic American steakhouse tradition in Montecito since 2000.

We believe that what we do reflects what we value:

A comfortable setting that’s right for brunch, a casual midweek burger or a special-occasion dinner

A warm welcome for old friends and new acquaintances

Well-crafted cocktails and a cellar of premium wines

An inviting old-school bar with wainscoted walls and a friendly staff

Unsurpassed ingredients: USDA prime beef and the freshest seafood

The same exacting standards for everything on the menu — steaks, chops, sides, salads and desserts

Professional servers who are caring and attentive

      Careful attention to the details

Dedication to our customers' enjoyment, relaxation and happiness

Lucky’s: Let our values feed your good fortune!

Lucky's occupies a building complex originally constructed as the Montecito Bungalows back in 1926 when Coast Village Road was part of Highway 1, the original Pacific Coast Highway.

A variety of individuals and businesses would occupy this complex as the old Coast Highway was eventually replaced by US101 as the main artery of California travel and commerce.

Among businesses occupying this spot were: The Pink Squirrel Bar in the '50s; Ireland's Restaurant in the '60s; Chanteclair in the '70s; Santa Fe in the '80s; The Grill Restaurant & Sports Bar and the Coast Village Grill in the '90s.

By the end of the '90s, 1279 Coast Village Road began to succumb to the strain of its many years of service and local legend spoke of the location as being out of luck.

Gene Montesano believes in luck and he knows that the harder one works, the more luck one has. So Gene, with his friends, Jimmy Argyropoulos and Herb Simon, took over the business at 1279 Coast Village Road. They gave it the makeover it deserved after so many years of good service to its community.

Gene and his friends were right and 1279 Coast Village Road once again serves its community as LUCKY’S: Montecito’s second living room. They hope you enjoy the end result of their hard work. They know you deserve it after a long day of working hard for good luck of your own.
