    Join fellow walkers at Hendry's Beach (aka Arroyo Burro Beach County Park) every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 8:40 to walk the beach, visit, make new friends and catch up with old friends, spot whales and dolphins, and get fresh air and exercise. We'll meet at the top of the stairs down to the beach, between The Boathouse restaurant and the lifeguard stand.

    Some of us walk fast, and some of us stroll. We suggest wearing appropriate shoes to walk on the beach or up to the nearby Douglas Preserve, when the tide is high.

    After the walk, we will often gather at the picnic tables near our starting point, and share a snack and conversation. Hope to see you there!

  • Cycling: Rincon to Ventura & Back Bike Ride

    We have a beautiful ride planned for Sunday. Hope to see a big group at the parking lot at Rincon at 9am. It's a 27-mile flat, seaside ride to Ventura and back, with a planned coffee break at Palermo Coffee https://palermocoffee.com/ 

    Ebikes are always welcome. It's a great opportunity for all riding levels to participate! We'll stop a few times along the way to regroup.

    Start: Sunday, September 27, 9am in the parking lot at Rincon Beach (Bates Rd exit on Hwy 101).  See link below for exact location.

    The ride typically takes around three hours including a leisurely coffee break. If you prefer a shorter ride, it's always an option to turn around early.

    Let's play! Pickleball is a fun way to socialize and get a workout at the same time! This event is open to players of all skill levels and abilities. We organize our courts from beginner on up through advanced intermediate.

    By the way, if you'd like to take a free intro lesson or brush up your skills, Dynamite Pickleball is a great place to take classes and clinics. Here's a link to the official rules as well.
    We will meet at the last set of courts if they're available. Otherwise, look for a group of folks with name tags. Unfortunately, SB Parks & Rec doesn't allow us to put our Newcomers sign out.

    You'll pay the $7 fee with the parking attendant, park, then walk all the way down to the end of the sidewalk.

    If there is rain or the courts are wet from rain the day before, the event will be canceled.

  • Happy Hikers - Tunnel Rd/Mission Canyon to Inspiration Pt

    Tunnel Road to Inspiration Point 

    Bring plenty of water

    Inspiration Point from Mission Canyon – At the Trailhead at the end of Tunnel Road; allow a little extra time to walk up from the parking areas.  

    This is one of our shorter and easier hikes and should take about 90 minutes total depending upon how much time we allow at the top for the view.  We begin at the trailhead gate (at the end of Tunnel Road).  Please note the parking directions below if you have not done this hike.  The hike follows Mission Canyon, crosses Mission Creek via a bridge, and meets the Jesusita Trail.  Jesusita travels up to Inspiration Point, elevation 1750’, that offers sweeping vistas of the city and ocean. 

    Total distance: 3.7 miles.  Elevation gain: 800 feet.  Difficulty: Moderate.

    DIRECTIONS:   From the Mission, take Mission Canyon Road north towards the mountains for 0.6 miles to Foothill Road and turn right.  Drive 0.2 miles to Mission Canyon Road and turn left.  Continue 0.3 miles and bear left at the split onto Tunnel Road.  The trailhead is about 1.1 miles up Tunnel Road.

    PARKING: There are about 15 parking spots near the trailhead and they fill up, so below are some additional parking turnouts along Tunnel Road.  Arrive a little early so you get a good spot and/or have time to walk up to the trailhead.  NOTES: 1) All parking areas are on the right side as you drive UP Tunnel Road.  2) There is a turnaround area at the trailhead if you need to drive back down to a parking place. 3) Park with your tires outside of the white line--if you park on or over the line, you may get a ticket.

    Santa Barbara Harbor is a picturesque waterfront area with a maritime museum, restaurants, and shops. The walkway offers stunning harbor and ocean views, making it perfect for bird-watching, photography, or plein air painting. The breakwater provides a pleasant stroll along the water's edge and keeps the waves at bay for yachts. Visitors can enjoy peaceful walks with beautiful sunset views and the sound of rolling waves.

    Stearns Wharf is a historic, landmark wooden pier located at the end of State Street in Stearns Wharf. Built in 1872 by local lumberman John P. Stearns, it is the oldest working wooden wharf in California, offering scenic ocean views, dining, shopping, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center.

    Several Water Crossings!

     We will hike the beautiful Rattlesnake Canyon trail on Friday.  This is one of Santa Barbara's most popular trails.  (The Rattlesnake Trail is named for its curves, not creatures).

    Rattlesnake is a moderately difficult hike with 3 water crossings. A more strenuous option continuing to Gibraltar Rd. from the meadow area is possible (if open) for those who wish.  The main group will hike the familiar trail to and from the meadow.  This is an out and back hike - go at your own pace and turn back anytime.

    Bring hiking poles to help with stream crossings.

    Hiking Distance:  3.0 miles out and back to the meadow with an elevation  gain of 1000 '.For those going up to Gibraltar Rd.  it is 4.5 miles out and back with a total with 1600' of elevation gain.

    Hiking times: 2-2.5 hours  (go at your own pace).

    My name is Megan Allen, and I’m reaching out on behalf of the Ride Santa Barbara 100, taking place on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

    We’re currently looking for local clubs, teams, organizations, and community groups to join us as volunteers and help bring this year’s event to life!

    This is a great opportunity for groups to volunteer together, earn volunteer or community service hours, support a local event, and cheer on cyclists throughout the Santa Barbara area.

    Volunteer opportunities include supporting aid stations, helping along the course, assisting participants, and other race-day roles. Groups are welcome to sign up together, making it an easy and fun way to get involved as a team.

    It's time for another SB Newcomers ride this Sunday.

    We'll start from the parking lot entrance to the Old Mission Santa Barbara at 9 am, Sunday, November 8. It's a shorter ride than usual, ~13 miles and ~500 feet of climbing. We'll roll through San Roque, Hope Ranch and end up on State Street. There's then a choice to ride north to the Old Mission again if you have a car there, or join some of us at Draughtsmen Aleworks at Mosaic Locale for a refueling stop, be it coffee, a carbonated adult beverage or a to-die-for waffle.

    Red Tile Walking Tour - Historic Landmarks

    There’s no denying that Santa Barbara’s skyline, peppered with white stucco walls and red-tiled roofs, provides the city with a striking backdrop of style and charm. And while the buildings may look similar to one another, each structure has its own unique story from past generations and highlights the evolution of downtown Santa Barbara.

    For those who like fresh air and don’t mind a bit of walking, we recommend lacing up a pair of comfy shoes and taking a stroll downtown along the self-guided Red Tile Walking Tour*. The full tour includes 17 stops and 22 historic adobes dating from the 1700s through the 1800s and embodies the best of our city’s Spanish-style architecture. You’ll discover smooth, white-stucco walls, memorable red tile roofs, flower-bedecked courtyards, hidden passageways, notable restaurants, theaters, museums, and architecturally significant government buildings.

    Route:

    Start at the (1) Santa Barbara County Courthouse, a Spanish-Moorish architectural masterpiece with an 80 foot clock tower. The Courthouse was completed in 1929. The interior includes hand-painted ceilings, giant murals, rare art, imported tiles, and more.

    Cross Anacapa Street to the elegant Spanish-style (2) Public Library.

    Go west on Anapamu Street to the (3) Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the charming La Arcada Plaza, with bronze statuary and informational plaques on the buildings. Then head down State Street through the landscaped downtown.

    At Carrillo Street, turn left to the (4) Hill-Carrillo Adobe which has the city’s first wooden floor inside. Some Adobes may require advanced reservation to go inside.

    Walk back out to State Street, go south two blocks and enter the quaint (5) El Paseo complex through the mid- block arcade.

    Continue through El Paseo to De la Guerra Street, and enter the charming courtyard of (6) Casa De la Guerra. Casa De la Guerra was constructed between 1819-1827 by the fifth Presidio comandante, José de la Guerra, who was among Santa Barbara’s wealthiest and most influential citizens.

    Cross the street to see (7) Plaza De la Guerra, where the first city council met in 1850. Next to it stands both City Hall and the offices of the Santa Barbara News-Press.

    Cross back and continue on De la Guerra Street toward Anacapa Street to the (8) Oreña Adobes, formerly owned by some of early Santa Barbara’s wealthy families.

    Cross Anacapa Street to (9) Presidio Avenue - the oldest street in Santa Barbara. See the plaque commemorating the Guard’s House at the corner of Presidio Avenue and De la Guerra Street. Now go into the Presidio Gardens on the site of the Presidio parade grounds.

    Leave as you came, and cross De la Guerra Street to the Santiago de la Guerra Adobe, one of the city’s oldest structures, and right next door, the (10) Lugo Adobe, nestled in a picturesque courtyard.

    Continue to the corner of De la Guerra and Santa Barbara streets to visit the (11) Santa Barbara Historical Museum. Check hours first and enter through the museum front door.

    Head around the corner down Santa Barbara Street, where you’ll find (12) Casa Covarrubias, and the adjoining Historic Adobe.

    Retrace your steps, cross De la Guerra Street, and walk up Santa Barbara Street to the (13) Rochin Adobe, built with some of the bricks salvaged from the Presidio walls.

    Just ahead, at the corner of Santa Barbara and Canon Perdido streets, you’ll find (14) El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park. Turn left on Canon Perdido Street and take note of the reconstructed Presidio Chapel and Cañeda Adobe, named after the Presidio soldier to whom it was deeded when the Presidio became inactive.

    On the other side of Canon Perdido Street, is (15) El Cuartel, the family residence of the soldier assigned to guard the western Presidio gate.

    At the corner of Anacapa Street, you’ll find the Spanish- deco-style (16) Main Post Office.

    Diagonally across Anacapa Street is the (17) Lobero Theatre.

    Proceed up Anacapa Street and end your memorable tour back at the Courthouse. This pleasant downtown walk will introduce you to Santa Barbara’s most interesting historic landmarks in approximately 12 blocks. Numerous restaurants and shops can be found along the way. The Red Tile Walking Tour was originally developed by the Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce. The County Courthouse is one of the architectural gems of Downtown Santa Barbara.

  • Cycling: Gobernador (Goob Loop)

    This weekend's ride takes us a bit farther east, through Carpinteria and to Gobernador Canyon Rd, which may be new to some of you. It's a popular route with the local Echelon cycle club. 

    After cruising back to SB on 192 / Foothill Road, through Summerland and Montecito, we'll end the ride at the Helena Avenue Bakery in the Funk Zone https://www.helenaavenuebakery.com/

    The route ups the mileage a bit to ~33 miles with ~1400 feet of climbing, but besides the climb up Gobernador, it should feel mostly flat. Riders of all experience levels on any type of bike are welcome, and we’ll stop several times to regroup. Please ensure you are confident navigating urban traffic. We also highly recommend downloading the route beforehand so you’re prepared to navigate independently if needed.

    Warren Miller Film and Happy Hour

    Come celebrate the annual start to winter for skiers and snowboarders with the release of Warren Miller’s latest Ski & Snowboard film at the Lobero Theater!!

    We will start the evening with Happy Hour at the M Special Taproom, then walk over to the beautiful Lobero Theater for the film. This year’s movie (his 77th!!) is Days Off — a look at what the world’s best do when there is no agenda and no competition, just unscripted joy. Cue Alaska heli-drops, Banff skijoring, Hokkaido powder, Chamonix, Deer Valley, Whistler and more!!

    Lobero Theater – purchase your own tickets – this SELLS OUT every year. Tickets will be on sale atwww.lobero.org or the Lobero box office.

    The Snow Sports Committee invites you to a no-host happy hour at M Special Taproom (634 State St.) from 5:30–6:30 for food and/or a drink. We’ll then walk two blocks to the Lobero Theater for the 7:00 pm film. You don’t want to miss it!

    Time for another Newcomer Ride! This is our third and last ride for November. 

    This week's adventure starts at Java Station on Hollister. The route will follow the Obern trail through UCSB. Continue on past Costco to Sandpiper Golf Course. Cross over the 101 and take Cathedral Oaks to the Marie Ygnatio Trail. Then back to the Obern trail and finish at Java Station, where we can socialize with some coffee, tea and food!

    Ellwood Mesa is a 230-acre open space that includes 10 miles of trails, Goleta Butterfly Preserve and public beach access. Most visitors come to this area to hike, bike and horseback ride or to experience the magic of the annual monarch butterfly migration in late fall/early winter.

    Coronado Butterfly Preserve

    Every November through February, more than 100,000 monarch butterflies migrate to Santa Barbara to escape the winter chill. Coronado Butterfly Preserve is one of the best places to view and experience the migration firsthand. It’s a 78-acre grove and windrow habitat located on the north side of the mesa.

    The Coronado Butterfly Preserve opens at sunrise and closes at sunset. Admission is free, but the City of Goleta will accept donations to support the preservation of this site as well as their docents who lead tours every Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the migration.

    When visiting the preserve, we recommend wearing sturdy shoes, as the terrain varies, and bringing binoculars to best experience the view of the migrating monarch butterflies. Parking is free.

     

    Route:

    1.    1. Start at Coronado Butterfly Preserve, 401 Coronado Dr, Goleta, CA 93117

    2.    2. Amble southwest along the trail to Monarch Butterfly Grove (0.2 mi)

    3.    3. Return to trail and amble southwest to Pottter’s Point (0.4 mi)

    4.    4. Amble southeast along the Bluff’s Overlook Trail (0.6 mi)

    5.    5. Amble north to first left trail (0.2 mi)

    6.    6. Amble west back to Monarch Butterfly Grove (0.5)

    7.    7. Amble north to our starting point 401 Coronado Dr (0.2 mi)

    8.    8. Join us for post amble coffee/snack at Anna’s Marketplace Bakery in Goleta
