Plein Air Painting simply means making art outdoors, inspired by the surrounding landscape. Create in whatever way you like: draw, paint, doodle, knit, sculpt, collage, photograph, or write a poem!

Novice creators are welcome and encouraged! Formal instruction will not be provided – but you will be in the fellowship of other creative folks who can support you on your journey! Bring any art supplies you want to work with – watercolors, pastels, and colored pencils are lightweight beginner-friendly art materials.

We will hike the Cold Springs loop starting with the Ridge trail to Edison Catway for some great views and then return on the East Fork of Cold Springs Trail.  This trail is exposed on the hike up ridge trail but shady along the East fork on the way back. It offers some great views on the top and beautiful small waterfalls along East Cold Springs.

    Elevation gain: ~1,000 ft.

    Distance : ~3.2 miles 2- hours duration

    Trail Rating: Moderate (AllTrails rating)

    Google Maps for the trailhead

DIRECTIONS:  Meet on east side of the bridge on E. Mountain Drive on the east (Montecito) side of the creek. The bridge is now open and we will meet on the east side of the creek at the trailhead.

From either direction on Hwy 101, exit at Olive Mill Road and turn toward the mountains. Continue up Olive Mill Rd 1.0 mile, crossing East Valley Rd where name changes to Hot Springs Rd. After another 1.0 mile turn left on East Mountain Drive. Go 1.1 miles to the trailhead on the right, just before the creek crossing.  (You’ll probably see cars & hikers when you first turn onto East Mountain Drive. That is another trailhead.  Do not stop. Continue 1.1 miles.)

Validation Annex is the newest location of Validation Ale, a craft brewery restaurant with a unique concept that engages customers in deciding what is brewed next. Validated beer is pit against a new Vying recipe of similar type to see if the new brew should take over as the primary tap. The space is more handsome than most expect for a local brewery with curved walnut panels, massive doors and windows, and clean modern restrooms…And because no one likes fighting for a bartender’s attention, Validation Ale allows you to start, manage, and/or close your tab by using one of the QR codes on the bar and tables. Also, thanks to the reverse-osmosis tap on the wall, you never have to ask for water. “I’ve been home brewing for 12 years, and I’ve always wanted a brewery,” says the owner Brian. “But whether you’re a beer nerd like me or you’ve only had Coors your whole life, you’re welcome either way. We want this to be about community.”

TGIF events are a great way to start the weekend in a fun, relaxing setting. At TGIF, you will make new friends, catch up with existing friends and get to know the local restaurants and bars. With no registration required, the events are open Newcomers and graduates...and attendees can bring a friend along. Come join us Newbies!

This is a pay-as-you-go event. Please note that tips are not included in the price of food an beverages. Kindly tip your servers and bartenders when you order food & drink (SBNC recommends tipping 20% or more). We want to leave a positive in the community at all times and remain consistent with the Club's values, by treating everyone with respect.

To help us assure the best experience for all at our very well attended TGIF events, please refrain from bringing pets and dogs (other than Service Animals).

The 4th annual Newcomers Snow Sports trip to Mammoth brought together new members, longtime newcomers, and alumni in January. For about 4 days we skied, snowboarded, and cross-country skied in groups of similar levels (green/ blue and blue/black runs). Highlights were: the hosted mountain tour, happy hours, lunches, dinners, and great conversations on the ski lifts.

The Snow Sports Committee would love to grow our group of Newcomer Snow Sports enthusiasts. So if you like snow sports of any kind (downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, tubing, ice skating, or snowshoeing) please join us at our Spring Social hosted at a member’s private residence (address will be provided upon RSVP). There will be Bavarian-inspired appetizers, wine, home-brewed beer tastings, and other refreshments for you to enjoy. You are encouraged to wear logo-themed attire from your favorite resort!

Additionally, if you would like to become a member of the committee please contact us at: snowsports@sbnewcomers.org

    M.Special...

We have a bunch of Miller and Malloys involved in M.Special so we started our naming search there. "Miller" was obviously taken and "Malloy Brewing Co" was being used by a guy who was brewing out of his garage, so we settled on "M" followed by "Special",  with that being the name of our Grandpa Emmett’s race cars from the 1950’s. There were many versions ranging from Friday Night Special stock cars to even a Malloy Special that raced in the Indy 500 in 1955. Now anyone with an M in their name gets naming credit, like our Brewers Max and Michael or our Manager Megan or even the local Mailman who stops by everyday.

The portfolio of beers are diverse, ranging from our flagship M. Special American Lager, some amazing IPA's such as the Greatland IPA and Lazy Eye DIPA, to a rich and flavorful Dozer Brown Ale, and much more. You can find these beers at most local markets between Ventura and SLO, or you can visit us at our taproom in Goleta where you'll find a welcoming space with lot's of good times to be had seven days a week.
