Happy Hikers: San Ysidro-McMenemy-Girard Loop (October 23, 2026)

No hike if it is raining - bring plenty of water!

San Ysidro Trail to Saddle Rock This hike begins at the San Ysidro trail and then connects over to Saddle Rock on the McMenemy trail and loops back west on the Girard trail back to the McMenemy trail. The distance is about 4.5 miles and will take approximately 2 - 2 1/2 hours. Go at your own pace and there are good turn back points at the interconnection of the McMenemy and Girard Trails (which would make an approximately 3 mile hike). Total elevation gain 1,100 ft. As you traverse over to Saddle Rock there are views of ocean, canyons, valleys and creeks. This is a more difficult hike especially in the heat but there are options to turn around before the steepest section. You may want to bring hiking poles.

DIRECTIONS: Meet at the San Ysidro trail head on Mountain Drive just east of San Ysidro Ranch. From either direction, exit Fwy 101 at San Ysidro Rd and turn toward the mountains. Go 1.0 mile to East Valley Rd (CA 192) and turn right. Continue 0.9 miles to Park Lane and turn left. (Park Lane is easy to miss. Look for Eucalyptus trees on your left. You’ll turn left after the last one.) Go 0.4 miles and as Park Lane turns right, you veer left onto East Mountain Drive. The trailhead is 0.2 miles ahead on the right. Park on East Mountain.

Cycling: Dolphin Fountain - Montecito Village - Eucalyptus Hill - Downtown (October 25, 2026)

Due to scheduling conflicts, this will be our only ride in October so don't miss it! Please join us on Sunday, October 25 at 9am. We'll start pedaling at the Dolphin Fountain in downtown Santa Barbara, swing by Butterfly Beach, take on some hills on the way to the Eucalyptus Hill neighborhood, before we end the ride at Santa Barbara Roasting Company for a post-ride coffee and socializing https://www.sbcoffee.com/

The route is ~13 miles with ~800 feet of climbing. As always, any types of bikes and rider levels are welcome, and we'll stop several times to regroup.

Let's play! Pickleball is a fun way to socialize and get a workout at the same time! This event is open to players of all skill levels and abilities. We organize our courts from beginner on up through advanced intermediate.

By the way, if you'd like to take a free intro lesson or brush up your skills, Dynamite Pickleball is a great place to take classes and clinics. Here's a link to the official rules as well.
We will meet at the last set of courts if they're available. Otherwise, look for a group of folks with name tags. Unfortunately, SB Parks & Rec doesn't allow us to put our Newcomers sign out.

You'll pay the $7 fee with the parking attendant, park, then walk all the way down to the end of the sidewalk.

If there is rain or the courts are wet from rain the day before, the event will be canceled.

Stride by the Tide: Coastal Walks (October 27, 2026)

Join fellow walkers at Hendry's Beach (aka Arroyo Burro Beach County Park) every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 8:40 to walk the beach, visit, make new friends and catch up with old friends, spot whales and dolphins, and get fresh air and exercise. We'll meet at the top of the stairs down to the beach, between The Boathouse restaurant and the lifeguard stand.

Some of us walk fast, and some of us stroll. We suggest wearing appropriate shoes to walk on the beach or up to the nearby Douglas Preserve, when the tide is high.

Happy Hikers - Gaviota Peak and Trespass Trail (October 30, 2026)

No hike if raining. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Sorry no dogs allowed in Gaviota State Park. There is a $2 parking fee (cash only). There is free parking just down the road (500').

Gaviota Peak – 8:30 am at the trailhead. This hike has been a big hit the times we've done it. This is a very scenic but strenuous, longer hike to the 2,450 foot summit in the Santa Ynez Mountains, overlooking the Pacific coast west of Santa Barbara. Two trails form a loop: the steeper, more enclosed Gaviota Peak Trail on the way up and the slightly longer, more exposed, but scenic Trespass Trail on the way down. Hikers can do the loop or do an out & back hike on Gaviota Peak Trail.

It is about a 30-35 min drive from 101/154 to get to the trailhead but you won't be disappointed by the spectacular views. It is more of a workout than most of our hikes, but not crazy by any means. Length: 3.1 miles (up the Gaviota Peak Trail), 3.4 miles (down the Trespass Trail) for a total of 6.5 miles. Elevation change: 2162 feet. We should be back to the trailhead a little after noon (~3 hour hike). Also, it's only 15 minutes to Industrial Eats in Buellton for those interested in lunch.

Directions: Meet at the trailhead, which is about a 30-35 minute drive. The parking area is off of US 101 just past the tunnel--a right exit onto Hwy 1 at Vandenberg, then an immediate right on a short, no-name road to the trail head.

There is a $2 parking fee per car (cash only) and no dogs. Use lots of sunscreen and bring a snack.

East Cold Springs Loop (Ridge trail to East Cold Springs trail)

We will hike the Cold Springs loop starting with the Ridge trail to Edison Catway for some great views and then return on the East Fork of Cold Springs Trail. This trail is exposed on the hike up ridge trail but shady along the East fork on the way back. It offers some great views on the top and beautiful small waterfalls along East Cold Springs.

Elevation gain: ~1,000 ft.

Distance : ~3.2 miles 2- hours duration

Trail Rating: Moderate (AllTrails rating)

Directions- Meet on east side of the bridge on E. Mountain Drive on the east (Montecito) side of the creek. The bridge is now open and we will meet on the EAST side of the creek at the trailhead.

From either direction on Hwy 101, exit at Olive Mill Road and turn toward the mountains. Continue up Olive Mill Rd 1.0 mile, crossing East Valley Rd where name changes to Hot Springs Rd. After another 1.0 mile turn left on East Mountain Drive. Go 1.1 miles to the trailhead on the right, just before the creek crossing. (You’ll probably see cars & hikers when you first turn onto East Mountain Drive. That is another trailhead. Do not stop. Continue 1.1 miles.)

Cycling: SB Old Mission to Draughtsmen via Hope Ranch (November 08, 2026)

It's time for another SB Newcomers ride this Sunday.

We'll start from the parking lot entrance to the Old Mission Santa Barbara at 9 am, Sunday, November 8. It's a shorter ride than usual, ~13 miles and ~500 feet of climbing. We'll roll through San Roque, Hope Ranch and end up on State Street. There's then a choice to ride north to the Old Mission again if you have a car there, or join some of us at Draughtsmen Aleworks at Mosaic Locale for a refueling stop, be it coffee, a carbonated adult beverage or a to-die-for waffle.

As always, any types of bikes and rider levels are welcome, and we'll stop several times to regroup. When: Sunday, November 8 at 9 am

Weekend Amblers: Red Tile Walking (Ambling) Tour (November 08, 2026)

Red Tile Walking Tour - Historic Landmarks

There’s no denying that Santa Barbara’s skyline, peppered with white stucco walls and red-tiled roofs, provides the city with a striking backdrop of style and charm. And while the buildings may look similar to one another, each structure has its own unique story from past generations and highlights the evolution of downtown Santa Barbara.

For those who like fresh air and don’t mind a bit of walking, we recommend lacing up a pair of comfy shoes and taking a stroll downtown along the self-guided Red Tile Walking Tour*. The full tour includes 17 stops and 22 historic adobes dating from the 1700s through the 1800s and embodies the best of our city’s Spanish-style architecture. You’ll discover smooth, white-stucco walls, memorable red tile roofs, flower-bedecked courtyards, hidden passageways, notable restaurants, theaters, museums, and architecturally significant government buildings.

Route:

Start at the (1) Santa Barbara County Courthouse, a Spanish-Moorish architectural masterpiece with an 80 foot clock tower. The Courthouse was completed in 1929. The interior includes hand-painted ceilings, giant murals, rare art, imported tiles, and more.

Cross Anacapa Street to the elegant Spanish-style (2) Public Library.

Go west on Anapamu Street to the (3) Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the charming La Arcada Plaza, with bronze statuary and informational plaques on the buildings. Then head down State Street through the landscaped downtown.

At Carrillo Street, turn left to the (4) Hill-Carrillo Adobe which has the city’s first wooden floor inside. Some Adobes may require advanced reservation to go inside.

Walk back out to State Street, go south two blocks and enter the quaint (5) El Paseo complex through the mid- block arcade.

Continue through El Paseo to De la Guerra Street, and enter the charming courtyard of (6) Casa De la Guerra. Casa De la Guerra was constructed between 1819-1827 by the fifth Presidio comandante, José de la Guerra, who was among Santa Barbara’s wealthiest and most influential citizens.

Cross the street to see (7) Plaza De la Guerra, where the first city council met in 1850. Next to it stands both City Hall and the offices of the Santa Barbara News-Press.

Cross back and continue on De la Guerra Street toward Anacapa Street to the (8) Oreña Adobes, formerly owned by some of early Santa Barbara’s wealthy families.

Cross Anacapa Street to (9) Presidio Avenue - the oldest street in Santa Barbara. See the plaque commemorating the Guard’s House at the corner of Presidio Avenue and De la Guerra Street. Now go into the Presidio Gardens on the site of the Presidio parade grounds.

Leave as you came, and cross De la Guerra Street to the Santiago de la Guerra Adobe, one of the city’s oldest structures, and right next door, the (10) Lugo Adobe, nestled in a picturesque courtyard.

Continue to the corner of De la Guerra and Santa Barbara streets to visit the (11) Santa Barbara Historical Museum. Check hours first and enter through the museum front door.

Head around the corner down Santa Barbara Street, where you’ll find (12) Casa Covarrubias, and the adjoining Historic Adobe.

Retrace your steps, cross De la Guerra Street, and walk up Santa Barbara Street to the (13) Rochin Adobe, built with some of the bricks salvaged from the Presidio walls.

Just ahead, at the corner of Santa Barbara and Canon Perdido streets, you’ll find (14) El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park. Turn left on Canon Perdido Street and take note of the reconstructed Presidio Chapel and Cañeda Adobe, named after the Presidio soldier to whom it was deeded when the Presidio became inactive.

On the other side of Canon Perdido Street, is (15) El Cuartel, the family residence of the soldier assigned to guard the western Presidio gate.

At the corner of Anacapa Street, you’ll find the Spanish- deco-style (16) Main Post Office.

Diagonally across Anacapa Street is the (17) Lobero Theatre.

Proceed up Anacapa Street and end your memorable tour back at the Courthouse. This pleasant downtown walk will introduce you to Santa Barbara’s most interesting historic landmarks in approximately 12 blocks. Numerous restaurants and shops can be found along the way. The Red Tile Walking Tour was originally developed by the Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce. The County Courthouse is one of the architectural gems of Downtown Santa Barbara.

Cycling: Gobernador (Goob Loop) (November 15, 2026)

This weekend's ride takes us a bit farther east, through Carpinteria and to Gobernador Canyon Rd, which may be new to some of you. It's a popular route with the local Echelon cycle club.

After cruising back to SB on 192 / Foothill Road, through Summerland and Montecito, we'll end the ride at the Helena Avenue Bakery in the Funk Zone https://www.helenaavenuebakery.com/

The route ups the mileage a bit to ~33 miles with ~1400 feet of climbing, but besides the climb up Gobernador, it should feel mostly flat. Riders of all experience levels on any type of bike are welcome, and we’ll stop several times to regroup. Please ensure you are confident navigating urban traffic. We also highly recommend downloading the route beforehand so you’re prepared to navigate independently if needed.

Snow Sports: Warren Miller Film and Happy Hour (November 18, 2026)

Come celebrate the annual start to winter for skiers and snowboarders with the release of Warren Miller’s latest Ski & Snowboard film at the Lobero Theater!!

We will start the evening with Happy Hour at the M Special Taproom, then walk over to the beautiful Lobero Theater for the film. This year’s movie (his 77th!!) is Days Off — a look at what the world’s best do when there is no agenda and no competition, just unscripted joy. Cue Alaska heli-drops, Banff skijoring, Hokkaido powder, Chamonix, Deer Valley, Whistler and more!!

Lobero Theater – purchase your own tickets – this SELLS OUT every year. Tickets will be on sale at www.lobero.org or the Lobero box office.

The Snow Sports Committee invites you to a no-host happy hour at M Special Taproom (634 State St.) from 5:30–6:30 for food and/or a drink. We’ll then walk two blocks to the Lobero Theater for the 7:00 pm film. You don’t want to miss it!

It's the perfect spot for newcomers to hang out, relax, and get plugged into the community. Fig Mountain has 32 taps of their award-winning craft beers on draft, but they also serve plenty of select wines and hard kombuchas, so there is truly something for everyone. Bring a jacket, as Fig is an Indoor/Outdoor location. Can't wait to see you all there!

TGIF events are a great way to start the weekend in a fun, relaxing setting. At TGIF, you will make new friends, catch up with existing friends and get to know the local restaurants and bars. With no registration required, the events are open to Newcomers and graduates...and attendees can bring a friend along.

This is a pay-as-you-go event. Please note that tips are not included in the price of food an beverages. We want to leave a positive impression on the community and remain consistent with the Club's values by treating everyone with respect.

Cycling: Java Station to Sandpiper via Trails (November 22, 2026)

Time for another Newcomer Ride! This is our third and last ride for November.

This week's adventure starts at Java Station on Hollister. The route will follow the Obern trail through UCSB. Continue on past Costco to Sandpiper Golf Course. Cross over the 101 and take Cathedral Oaks to the Marie Ygnatio Trail. Then back to the Obern trail and finish at Java Station, where we can socialize with some coffee, tea and food!

Sorry, but we have reached the participant limit on this amble. However, we have added a duplicate amble (2^nd Ellwood Mesa and Monarch Butterfly Amble) a week later, Sunday Dec. 13. So, please consider registering for that amble if you are available.

Ellwood Mesa is a 230-acre open space that includes 10 miles of trails, Goleta Butterfly Preserve and public beach access. Most visitors come to this area to hike, bike and horseback ride or to experience the magic of the annual monarch butterfly migration in late fall/early winter.

Coronado Butterfly Preserve

Every November through February, more than 100,000 monarch butterflies migrate to Santa Barbara to escape the winter chill. Coronado Butterfly Preserve is one of the best places to view and experience the migration firsthand. It’s a 78-acre grove and windrow habitat located on the north side of the mesa.

The Coronado Butterfly Preserve opens at sunrise and closes at sunset. Admission is free, but the City of Goleta will accept donations to support the preservation of this site as well as their docents who lead tours every Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the migration.

When visiting the preserve, we recommend wearing sturdy shoes, as the terrain varies, and bringing binoculars to best experience the view of the migrating monarch butterflies. Parking is free.

Route:

Due to overwhelming demand, we have scheduled a second Ellwood Mesa and Monarch Butterfly Amble (same exact route) on December 13. Please do not register if you have already registered for the December 6 amble.

Weekend Amblers: Andrée Clark Bird Refuge & East Beach Amble (January 10, 2027)

The Andrée Clark Bird Refuge is a 42-acre open space park that includes a 29-acre lake, and an artificially modified estuary that supports brackish (slightly salty) wetlands. The park provides passive recreation opportunities such as bird watching, hiking, and biking. Boating and fishing are prohibited, as is feeding the wildlife. This park's lake provides a safe haven for migratory and local birds. A multi-modal (walking, running, and biking) path, interpretive self-guided tours, and walking trails make this a popular spot. Outdoor fitness equipment at the adjacent Stretch Station allows stretching before or after exercise in the area.

The Bird Refuge includes walking paths along the northern shore and three viewing platforms that provide excellent opportunities for bird and other wildlife observation. Over 200 species of birds have been observed at the Bird Refuge. Native and non-native turtles can be observed basking on floating vegetation and along the perimeter of the islands. Sensitive wildlife resources present at the Bird Refuge include tidewater goby, southwest pond turtle, and several birds protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

Route:

1.    1. Start at Little King Coffee

2.    2. Amble counter clockwise along the north shore of the lake (0.3 mi)

3.    3. Retrace our steps and continue clockwise around the lake to East Beach (0.9 mi)

4.    4. Amble west along East Beach until about halfway (0.8 mi)

5.    5. Turnaround and retrace our steps back to the start, meet at Little King Coffee for coffee/snacks (1.4 mi)

Snow Sports: Mammoth Mountain Trip – Sunday, January 24 to Thursday, January 28, 2027 (Registration Opens November 3) (January 24, 2027)

The mountain is calling, and this year it might be shouting — our 7th Annual Snow Sports Adventure hits Mammoth Mountain Resort, January 24–28, 2027! ❄️

If you know, you know — this trip is the perfect mix of alpine adrenaline, mountain magic, and a whole lot of laughs. And this year, we're buzzing about more than the après-ski: forecasters are talking about a possible super El Niño winter, and we are officially doing our snow dances. We can't promise the snow gods will deliver, but we're packing our goggles and our optimism!

Just 5½ hours from Santa Barbara, you'll find yourself in the heart of a 3,500-acre winter playground with 25 lifts, 175 trails, and one seriously good-looking 3,000-foot vertical drop. Ski it, ride it, snowshoe it, spa it — or just sip something warm and watch the flakes fall. This trip is about fresh tracks and new friendships — equal parts powder and playtime. ⛷️

Trip Dates: Sunday, January 24 – Thursday, January 28, 2027
Roll in Sunday — ski a half-day if you can, or head straight to happy hour and a casual dinner to kick things off. Then spend Monday through Thursday doing whatever fills your snow-loving heart: shredding, soaking, sipping, or exploring. ️

What's Included
