Knapp's Castle Hike Two-Ways!

Did you know there are castle ruins in Santa Barbara's back yard? We're offering two different ways to participate in one of the coolest hikes around. 

Join us for a hike and huddle at Knapp's Castle. Built in 1916, this once impressive mansion has left its trace in the form of sandstone ruins. More info here!

We want everyone to be able to participate in the excursion, so we are planning two choices. Either way you choose to get there, we'll meet at the top at 10:30 am. Bring a snack to share...and bring your camera!

Option 1: the gung-ho hike (D-Lock leads)

Start time: 8:30 am at the trailhead off Paradise Rd

Distance: 6.6 miles round trip

Difficulty: moderate to strenuous

To bring: this hike has a fairly steep ascent, and not much tree cover, so bring a lot of water and proper sun protection. Trekking poles are great! 

Info: you will definitely get a workout, but it is absolutely worth it...you'll enjoy the breathtaking vistas and awesome ruins all the more when you make it to the top!

Directions: from US-101 in Santa Barbara take Hwy-154/State St exit north until you reach Paradise Rd (turn right). Continue for approximately 4 miles until you see a turn off on the right side with a sign for Snyder Trail. If you pass the Los Preitos Ranger Station you have gone only slightly too far.

Option 2: the pleasant ramble (leader TBD)

Start time: 10:00 am

Distance: 1.5 miles round trip

Difficulty: easy

Info: this is the shorter trek up to the Castle and it is all downhill to get there. You'll still enjoy a fresh-air excursion and the view without the intensity of Option 1. Again, not a lot of tree cover, so sun-protection is a must. 

Directions: from US-101 in Santa Barbara take Hwy-154/State St exit north for 10.5 miles. Turn right on East Camino Cielo for 2.9 miles to a parking pull out to the right, across from an unmarked gate on the left. From the gate it is a half-mile walk to the ruins.

CARPOOLS are strongly suggested for parking availability and efficiency. If you are interested in partaking in a carpool --or would be willing to be a driver-- please email reply. Ideally, I will organize carpools to meet at La Cumbre Mall parking lot at 8:00.
