    • Deep Sea Wine Tasting Room - 217 G, Stearns Wharf

It has been quite a while but Newcomers is returning to the sea, Deep Sea Wine Tasting Room on Stearn's Wharf.

The Deep Sea Wine Tasting Room, home of Conway Family Wines has recently renovated space that features 360 degree views of the Pacific coastline, Channel Islands, Santa Barbara Harbor and the Riviera.

Conway Family Wines is based in Santa Barbara County, where much of the land that is planted to grapevines is located twenty miles or less from the Pacific Ocean.  Coastal air is cooler than inland regions, and the geology of the land in Santa Barbara County lends itself to trapping cool air and moisture in the valleys.  Grapes grown in these areas are positively impacted by what they call the “ocean effect”.  This effect allows the grapes used for Deep Sea to ripen over a longer period of time.  The slow, steady development of this fruit leads to the perfect balance they look for when measuring sugar, acidity, and maturity of flavors that signify it is time to harvest.  This is a good thing, because wines from our area are known for having great balance, bright acidity, and of course beautiful California fruit.  They strive to capture all of those elements in their Deep Sea wines.

There is no better place to sip and savor Conway Family Wines, all while taking in the breathtaking views from their outdoor deck overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Here's how Sip, Sup & Say Hello! works!

Enjoy a casual potluck dinner party in a private home with your fellow Newcomers. Join in as either Host or Guest. (The Committee especially welcomes new Host homes.)

    • Hosts... offer their home as the setting for our meal, and they  coordinate with their guests to create the experience the group wants to have.  It can be as basic as setting a theme (or not), assigning dishes (or not) or going more formal with a sit down dinner (or not - paper plates are ok!). Formal sit down dinner seating is not necessary, but certainly ok!  Hosts homes can hold from 6 to 14 guests!  Host gets to decide on the number of guests.  Optional contribution to meal by the host is up to host.  Host provides tableware, glasses and water.
    • Guests... bring an assigned dish as coordinated with their host (e.g., appetizer, entree, side, or dessert) and their own beverages of choice.

If you’d like to be a Guest for this Sip, Sup and Say Hello! event, please register ASAP (and read the Cancellation Policy, below)!

Once registered, the Committee will email you a week or two before the event telling you: Host's name & address, and the Host will reach out to the assigned group to coordinate the evening!

If you'd like to be a future Host, or have questions, please contact Renee Martin at Rkaymartin@gmail.com

      Bon Appetit!

CANCELLATION POLICY: By registering for this event, you are agreeing to attend the event and to bring the dish (appetizer, entree, side, or dessert) that is assigned to you by your host.  Should you cancel after receiving your assignment, you agree to either provide a replacement Newcomer Guest or deliver your assigned dish to your Host’s home on the day of the event.  Hint: if you have scheduling pressures, consider using SBMenus.com.  For a small fee (about $5) they will deliver an item you purchase from one of many SB restaurants directly to your Host’s home on the day of the event.

      • Pure Order Brewing - 410 North Quarantina Street

This week Newcomers visits Pure Order Brewery, which is as close as you can get to spending good times with your friends in your backyard, without having to clean up after everyone leaves.

Though the brewery is located in the heart of Santa Barbara, Pure Order Brewery reaches to ancient German brewing recipes to create the purest and truest method of brewing for unprecedented and unmatched styles of beer. Pure Order Brewing brings to life the spirit of pure beer to the shores of Santa Barbara through a practice and style of brewing called Reinheitsgebot, which means “purity law” in German. Pure Order Brewery brings the flavors of old Germany and the smoothness of Santa Barbara to its shores and the many local patrons.

Adjacent to the taproom is the outdoor patio where you’ll often find a bevy of entertainers, such as local musicians and food trucks serving up their finest to happy guests. With some help from their local regulars in the summer of 16’ they built two Olympic style bocce ball courts and horseshoe pits to further entertain their beer drinking comrades. In short, Pure Order is pure fun.

It's never too late to have a happy childhood.  Set your inner kid free as we sit around the natural setting of a consciously designed, yet cozy outdoor fire pit at the Mission Canyon home of a fellow Newcomer.  We will be drawn in by the compelling yarns and penny whistle stylings of master storyteller Bryan Snyder.

Bryan Snyder grew up exploring the rolling hills and shady creeks of upstate New York. A year abroad in Scotland was filled with hitchhiking in the highlands and journeys to ruined castles.  This ignited his ongoing affinity for outdoor adventures, great and small.

His various close encounters with cliffs, storms, and wildlife over the years, led to an opportunity to write a column, “Off The Map”, in Chenango County, New York’s Evening Sun newspaper. Bryan has also taught natural science to young students at various environmental schools, from Maine to Hawaii.  He has also  authored several books before settling here in Santa Barbara.

Arrive at 7:30 for drinks and hors d'oeuvres.  Sunset is at 8 pm.  Stories commence at 8:15

FOTM is a regional non profit program that documents extraordinary local, national and international artists and their work.

Part of the documentation process is their monthly meet-the-artist "Spotlight Series" in which FOTM founder Donna Granata conducts a filmed interview, (similar to the Actor's Studio), before a live audience for archival purposes, as well as for future broadcasts. FOTM's archive has been utilized by art scholars and researchers since 1994.

The subject of this month's interview is Porfirio Gutierrez, an artist steeped in the weaving traditions of the Zapotec people of Oaxaca, Mexico, divides his time between that region, where his family lives, and Ventura, where he has a studio. Employing methods long used by weavers in Oaxaca and materials prepared by family members, he weaves rugs and tapestries in both traditional and contemporary designs. Gutierrez was one of four artists selected by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian for the 2016 Artist Leadership Program.
