In the Community
Community Service plans presentations and tours of community cultural and humanitarian service organizations. The activities include information regarding volunteer opportunities at nonprofits. Events are planned to include a time for visiting and refreshments.  Local Heritage explores places and activities in and around Santa Barbara that relate to its history, special character, charm, and uniqueness. Each month the committee plans and coordinates an event for members.  Recent tours included the Santa Barbara Courthouse and the Tye Warner Sea Center.
TLC (Tender Loving Care)
helps Newcomers who need assistance due to illness, surgery, or other circumstances by coordinating volunteer support for these individuals. The committee also sends cards to those who are ill, have a death in the family, marry, have a new baby, etc.
Indoor Fun
Games People Play meets monthly, usually at members’ homes, for an evening of fun playing games such as Scrabble, Hearts, Pictionary, Go, and Yahtzee. Participants bring their own beverages and snacks.

Mah Jongg meets weekly at the Montecito Country Club for 2 to 3 hours of friendly play and conversation. The committee arranges for the venue and accepts reservations for tables of four.

Yoga is a series of sampler classes addressing
a range of health needs, from general fitness and well-being to back care and stress reduction. It is held in a studio and taught by a Newcomer trained in yoga and yoga therapy.

Book Discussion meets monthly in the afternoon to discuss a book selected by the committee. One person acts as facilitator in order to keep the discussion lively. The meetings are usually held in members’ homes, and the committee provides light refreshments. Due to house size limitations, the group is limited to about twelve.

Guitar & Folk Music meets monthly at members’ homes to give Newcomers a chance to dust off their old guitar, harmonica, or other acoustical instruments and play (even sing if you wish) music from a by-gone era. All talent levels (or lack thereof) are welcome.

Ballroom Dancing reserves an evening at a local recreation center, during which there are lessons for beginners, refreshers for more experienced dancers, and general dancing at the end.

*The activities, illustrated here and on other activities pages, are snapshots of activities at a given time.  Activities offered depend on the interests and desires of the members. As such they are dynamic.  New activities are regularly formed and existing activities sometimes abandoned.  Any member may start a new activity by contacting the VP-Activities and volunteering to be part of a new committee.
